Could i please rack your brains on how to get the weight of a welsh section b 3 yr old fillies crest.i have no ideas how to go about just taking the fat of her crest, her body is well covered but not grossly fat or anything but the crest just needs something to reduce it a bit. thanks

I used to use a neck sweat I got from America that was like a hood to wear only without the face bit...you could lunge and ride ponies in it. I have the same problem with a Sec C I ride and she wears a hood with my partners old wet suit cut up and sewn onto it and I lunge her in it and it does make a difference...I also feed a small amount of epsom salts to her as I beleive it helps break down the fat deposits..
My mare is fit and in hard work am always battling with her crest though

if your pony is in feed "good doer" only.. and plenty of water. nothing else. it will burn off the fat done this with a rather large lw cob.. after a month.. his neck was back to what it should you will go through 3-4 bags in the first week but as you go on.. will go to 1 bag per week. it worked for us!

Be carefull with large crest necks my vet and farrier both look at rock hard cresty necks as pre laminitis sign i know some ponies are far more prone to a cresty neck and some bloodlines seem to pass it on but they are a danger sign. Had a dartmoor that was not really overweight at all yet his neck was huge and through the winter when i tried to let him down just hay and water and a few hours out on poor grazing he came down with lami very badly and through that winter his neck fell over and his showing career was finished, happily we have got him healthy and sound but he is permanetly lean theses days and his neck has never recovered.

Be careful is quire correct - a large crest could be indicative of a pony being pre-laminitic. I would try to find an independent equine nutrionist to talk to - can't remember what it is, but a trace element supplement could be very useful. Nicola Tyler at Top Spec is very good to talk to and not just pushing her own products.
