Yes you can drive your shetland without blinkers if he is happy to have an object close behind him, but he should have a bit in his mouth as the bit is your only direct contact with him from the vehicle plus your voice and the whip (the whip should be in your right hand at all times when driving, and used as a leg aid to move him sideways as well as to go forward) but you must have a bit to be safe, so you can steer your pony as well as stop and start

I agree blinkers can be optional, so long as the animal is trained without, but bits should be compulsory. After checking his teeth try various mouth pieces until you find one that he is happy in. A lot of smaller ponies have very little space in their mouths and so need a thinner and arched or mullen mouthpiece.

Thanks so much . unfortunately i have to use the blinkers on his bridle as they come attached .i tried to take them off and put cheek pieces in place to hold the bit, but they where to long. But since putting this post in, i have just been patient with him and let him take me where he wants with the blinkers and bit in, and given him lots of praise, then i just very lightly put presser on the rains to turn him, its working! so i will carry on this way for a mo and see how i get on. and tips most welcome ;D need them as i have never done this befor EEEEK
