This question that charlotte69 asked on the judges thread that i have moved here:
Hi i have a Dartmoor that i have been showing in a couple of opens i am just wondering how are they expected to go i have mine balling on yet the two opens i have done the others have been going round like first ridden yet one open class when i had him balling on the judge loved him an we won so can anyone offer any advice ?

"Low and straight coming from the shoulder with good hock action but without exaggeration". This is the breed standard, so as long as you don't make the paces look unatural then I think you'll be fine. They still should cover the ground well in my opinion, just as long as they are not flicking toes.

Unfortunately some judges do seem to think that all small breeds should go like First Ridden ponies allthe time.

I agree should the judges not expect them to go like large breeds. They dont even ask for a gallop on the go around!
