does any one know of anyone who could repair my damaged swain adeney holly driving whip which my border terrier pups have chewed the lash off and eaten the silver handle the other end its well over 100 years old and ive owned it for 30 years im heartbroken over this , perhaps they though they were doing me a favour as after all it was only an old whip, and their mum deserved a new one, needless to say they have lived to tell the tale-----this time!!

cheekypiece, not sure where you are in the UK but there a couple of old boys who do the rounds of country shows/country sportsmans shows who can mend whips. Sorry I don't have names but I've had two hunt whips re-lashed and an old bone handled cane restored. They both make walking sticks> One was called Ron. I think one is from Shropshire and one from Devon. I dropped whips off at the CLA Game fair and picked them up at something like the West Midlands Game fair. Don't know if you have anything like these fairs in your area?

thanks for replies, i never though of the stick makers as its a new lash thats needed a very fine one at that the other end could be covered with a leather handle as it was all silver, but thats beyond my means to have that done now, i have just bought a replacement off ebay and have requested extra packaging to keep it safe in transit and your quite right pipsqueak they cost a fortune i cannot believe i have a beautiful old swaine and adeney stamped perfect holly whip minus the lash and handle i only left it for 20 seconds and damage done but lesson well learned

I am so sorry to hear about your holly driving whip, but now you have a new one coming do buy a whip reel for it, so you can hang it up on the wall and keep the nice curve in the thong, and I hope you will be able to find someone skilled in whip making to put the thong and handle back on your Swaine and Adeney, was it beautifully balanced, and lay unnoticed in your right hand when driving ?

hi globetrotter, this whip had not been off the whip real for the last 15 years, i only deceided to use it at the last minuite i think it was last used at windsor it was perfectly balanced and as you say weightless in your hand it has the whip reel that it came with all those years ago you are quite right in saying all goose quill whips MUST be kept on a reel if one is to keep the beautiful curve to the whip in tact, i have several of these whip reels old ones, and have had a local carpenter craft me some replicas which i use for the every day whips also please believe me i only left it for 30 seconds and it was so high up i didnt think for a moment that they could reach it perhaps my 3/4 wolf hound helped the border pups in their mischief but as i said lesson well learned!!! and many thanks for your replyyou are obviously very knowledgable in driving matters kind regards c/piece
