My daughter aged 11 has been offered the ride on a novice sp - a complete departure for us (reminds me of the old Best Turned Out days - having to keep her immaculate I mean!) and we are now arguing about how she should wear her hair. She seems utterly mad on the bun thing which I note a lot of young jockeys sport but I am wondering for show ponies if we shouldnt be doing something a little more glitzy...She flatly refuses to wear bunches and the pony is in the 138cm section. She has quite fine hair around her face that is impossible to tame, the rest is middle of her back straight blonde. Some girls are wearing pony tails but think that for her we might end up with loads of loose hairs on the navy blue jacket! Any ideas? And has anyone found a really good hair gel to keep it all tidy? Last Sunday I used the supreme highlighter to gel it down! If you french plait it she complains it hurts when her hat is on - children! Suggestions please!

I think it is a craze for 13.2 rider's to want to wear a bun. The rider who rides our 13.2,is 13 years old and she always asks to wear a bun, but we put her in two plaits with red ribbons on the end of each to match her tie.
I think bun's only look good on a 14.2 pony rider.

I believe that all show pony jockeys should have there hair in a nice neat pony tail. Im in my last year on 14.2s and still have a pony tail with a ribbon. I have the same problem with taming my hair and i use vo5 gel. I also ride an Highland but i wear a bun i jusst think thats more of an MnM or Show hunter thing. 13.2s you should still be looking half cute haha. Just my opinion

Just to go off the show pony hair subject slightly ....does anyone know where to get SMALL false buns ( ie with hair on them not the foam ) i have ordered two from Pretty ponies (2 in case i lose one !!) and although they are fab ...they are huge !!! and i cant wear them as they push my hat forward constantly even with extra padding in the hat to make it more stable and even tried sewing bun onto the hat and it still does it !! Any ideas please ...? !!!!

Without bun nets i wouldnt be able to show. They make my hair go into a gd shaped bun. Sometimes people use a normal hair net as well just for security

For false buns try the sidesaddles website - I remember buying one and its wasnt too big - I'd send it to you FOC but the dog had it for a toy......!
I now have photographic evidence of child on pony both with bun and with pony tail, she has a pretty profile so bun does look good but I think she looks 14.. and the pony tail is a mess. Will fight with her on Sunday, complete with Extra Strong Hair Gel and let you know on Monday whether I was strong enough to hold her down to do the two plaits!

My mother forced me to wear pig tails on my 14.2 sp, this was in the 80's and all I will say on the matter is that the Gilbert Scotts had a lot to answer for Their jockeys wore pigtails on a 14.2hh so so did I ..I was 15 at the time and think it scarred me for life Was never allowed to cut my hair and it was also dyed blonde as it looked better and caught the judges eye....according to mother !!

There have been some fab hairstyles over the years- yes the Gilberts probably do have a lot to answer to but so do the Jago's...hehe! Buns are fine on 14.2hh's but I currently put bunches in my 13.2hh jockey despite her protestations!
Hands up who remembers the grey 12.2hh of the Jago's ridden by (Baldwin the younger?, can't remember) a jockey sporting bunches and puce ribbons- ab fab! Even further in the mists of time Mandy Forster and her hair flicked up over her hat rim, also used by the aforementioned peeps some years later. I could go on and on..........................

Ha ha well when i rode for the jagos i cut my hair and got given the lovely blonde curly wig to wear!! Oh yes it was lovely, i never cut my hair short again but my mum really liked it! In fact i think Joseph found it in the lorry the other day and put it on! It was quite a reknowned wig and think it started with Poppy Peacock to so secretly i felt a little priviledge to wear it. I did have pigtails for a while that they use to pull through the sides of the hat and put wire in to make them stand up!! The wig did also get me featured in a book of hairstyles for riders!!

What a fab photo! More of them please! When I'm doing my bun, I just twist my hair round, then band, bun net, then band again, then bun net again, then band again, are you following! Kirby grips for stray hairs, if wearing Patey, hat with straps, I use a hair net instead of 2nd bun net! But then, everyone is different!

No I did have a fake hair piece too ...apparently it gave me a better pony tail .....think it still about somewhere .....the dogs think its a rat I remember the wig Clobo is wearing though I more from Poppy Peacocks era and remember her wearing it on Twylands Carillion I think...my mother soooo tried to copy it , thank god she never clicked it was a wig....bad enough with pig tails, false pony tail etc...god it hurt ....gave up SP's in '89 had enough would only do workers as mother did not bother with my hair so much

THOSE WERE THE DAYS!!!!!!!!!!! But in those days there were no harnesses on the hats.We always had a giggle at the thought that the first aiders would die if Poppy fell off and hat went rolling across the ring with wig attached .How would that look? Her head had come off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!he he he

I have to say i love the strapless hats and only wish they were still allowed (i know saftey etc and i do understand this) but they are so much more flattering and look really nice! No one recognises me in hack classes with my beagler on! I was quite lucky though as i did have quite a nice fine one for the jagos Mary Mary i love your pigtails but can understand why you were a little annoyed in 14.2 classes! The pony in my photo is Nuthurst Whodunnit i am sure some people on here remember him this one is of cusop boderman I think someone shld def bring them back into fashion, any volunters?

what stunning photos and even better stories - I can use the wig threat to browbeat daughter into wearing bunches....though at the weekend I must confess it was so hot and I was so fed up that I just abandoned fighting and let her wear a pony tail but tonight I will show her this thread! What was the name of the hair styles book for riders - that sounds well worth tracking down!

Anyone remember Alison Whiteley's Gilbert-Scott Blonde curly Sideburns?? They were just so false and "Puss in Boots". She always wore them with a far to small royal blue coat, striped shirt and starry tie when she rode Bennochy Royal Star. Looked like a pantomine act. The rest of us prayed it wouldn't catch on. Good pony and brilliant jockey but the hairdo was ridiculous!
