Does anyone know why Area 25 holds its shows on a Tuesday? Independant schools may welll have broken up but state schools have'nt, this excludes me, not only on the child front, but I am a teacher, no way could I get the day off, just 2 weeks before the end of term!!

NPS Area 25 have always held their Show on the second tuesday in July, the one time they tried a week-end the entries were down. A number of the County Shows are held during the week and they seem to get lots of children in there classes.

Amongst county shows held mid week term time are
Royal Cornwall Cheshire Lincoln Royal (though the BSPS classes are on the Sunday)
My daughter's school are very difficult about her having any time off and have always refused the 1 termtime show despite her having an exemplory attandence and academic record. Once again she has been refused permission for a day off as this "will impact her academic achievement".....she got 10 A's in GCSE last year!!! Can't phone in sick as have to pass headmistresses house in the lorry!!!!

Good idea whp...except the horses live at home!!! It is actually the head of year that has refused permission. I have now written to the head and stated that we are actually going to the show and she will be absent that day, rather than requesting permission. Someone has advised me that if you ask, they will say no so they are not condoning a day off school.
A friend's daughter was refused permission several years ago to attend our local county show so the following year she phone in sick (hid in lorry loo to shut out sound of tannoys). The daughter won and went champion...photo all over front of local paper, and , as if that wasn't bad enought - the school had a trip to the show and the result was announced for all to hear!!

If it was just my daughter having to go sick, I would not worry, but is a bit more difficult when I am a teacher!!! Time off for the dentist etc is difficult enough, can not see the Headmaster letting me have time off for a horse show!! LOL

I think teachers get enough time off. I wish I could have the whole summer, every weekend, bank holidays and other convienient weeks off throughout the year......try being a nurse.

There is also another NPS show the next day (Weds) @ Bicton
Other big shows that are (at leat partly) in the week: South of England Kent County New Forest Hickstead Royal Welsh NPS Champs PUK Champs HOYS Olympia
And that is just off the top of my head !!
Like any hobby - if you work fulltime (or at school for children) then you just have to juggle the different parts of life as best you can.
Personally I use at least half of my holiday allowance each year for shows and lessons. I have just booked a day off for Hickstead Derby meeting (fri 29 June), 4 days for Royal Welsh, 3 days for NPS Champs .....

I very much admire nurses
But you are welcome to my job any day, yes we have hoildays, but CANNOT have the odd day off here and there for shows,
i.e Royal Cornwall Three Counties HOYS Royal Show Hickstead and all the others that are not in school holidays, Never get home before 6pm and spend time with marking at weekends, which is a considerable amount when you are deal ing with 11 to 18 year olds!!

curious - surely you are a teacher by choice ? No-one is forcing you to do that job !!
There are pros and cons to most jobs. You may not get home before 6pm most days - but you do get more holiday overall than the rest of us 'normal' jobs. And syncs up with your kids school holidays of course, which many people struggle to get off work as need to negotiate timing of holidays to make sure there is always cover within a team 52 weeks a year.
I certainly never get home before 6pm myself either !! I commute to London, and usually dont even leave work until about 7pm at earliest, so get home about 9pm. And try and schedule my week to make time to leave early 2 days/week to go and ride my horse, in which case again get home about 9pm or later.
How about being happy for what you DO have .... and enjoying that ?

Who said I was unhappy?
Love what I do.....but get fed up with people telling me teachers never had it so good!
Drawing a line under this now, I only do a bit of showing for fun!

I would have thought with the current trend to encourage children to take part in sports and not watch tele/play on the PC all their spare time that schools should be encouraging children in their chosen sport. Let's face it they don't do much sport at a lot of schools these days.

Sorry curious - only going on the subject and tone of your original post about NPS A 25 show being on a Tuesday sounding like a complaint. I was at boarding school, so not only did I never go to a show on weekday during term time, but also many weekends I was also stuck at school. However I never felt hard done by - but only very lucky to have my own pony, do pony club, shows, eventing etc. If the school lets one child start having days off for horse shows, then it sets a precedent for the other children who want days off for family days out, holidays, etc. A child's education is very important and there is plenty of time in school holidays and weekends for ponies and shows. Sure you will find lots of shows for both you and your children to enjoy - have fun !

Should have said .... I very much respect teachers, I know it is not a job I envy or could do myself !! And it is extremely important job within society. So well done and keep up the good work

Ahhhhhhhhhh But the critical bit is "they are not representing their school" My reply to that used to be "My children have a talent for their chosen sport and are successful competing, if the school had an equestrian team no doubt they would be held up as shining examples" As for hours of homework My reply was "you have these children in school for at least six hours every day of term, if you can't find time to teach them don't send it home for me to do, my children have a life outside of school"
