Just wondering what peoples opinions are on which they think is best to do first. We want our 3yo filly to be broken to drive and have an opportunity for her to be broken under saddle early next Spring. Would it be benificial for her to be started under saddle first or do we just have her broken to drive. Thanks

If her main job is going to be a drive pony. I dont personally think there is any need to have her broken! But depends if you want to ride her, if so i think breaking first x

all mine are broken to drive first, it teaches them to go forward, to use their rear end and to listern to you voice. When they come to be broken to ride they can long rein for fun, drop into the bridle and go forward, and the big plus is they are totally bomb proof to hack. To drive first every time.....and its a real fun break for them when they have a rest from ridden show................

Another vote to break to drive first.. All the work is more or less done when you chose to ride. It also gives them manners!

i would rather break them to ride first they then have a nice mouth.learn to bend go round and will have 3 good paces to help u in the carriage.i have been working for a world class carriage driver and we break to ride first and then they all get schooled once a week under saddle as its easier to teach them stuff ridden.

sexy1234 In my opinion, and after 40 years of carriage driving, there is no difference in the making of a nice mouth whether you are training your horse or pony to ride or drive first. The mouthing procedure is the same, and should take a couple of weeks for the pony to be comfortable, and both ride or drive trainers should know how to long rein properly and how important ground training is for your horse or pony. I train my 2 year olds to long rein with the reins on the headcoller and they learn all the voice command's before having a bit, and after training as a 4 year old, a perfect mouth
