ever had to put up with strange requests or demands from livery owners, who are happy to take our money but not supply to our needs? what about this. currently who ever gets to the yard first feeds everything. However livery owners said she doesn't want anyone doing favours for anyone any more as it is making her lose money. Fair enough, no more turning out or bringing in for friends. But what about: currently, who ever gets to the yard first feeds everything. My completely non horsey husband, goes to yard early so I don't have to, he forgot to feed a horse whose owner didn't leave a feed out in a prominent place, and was slated by the owner and the groom for not doing so. Does the new policy effect him? Should he no longerr do a favour and feed everyone including the yard owners horses on a seperate yard or just do mine and upset all the others? What about when there are only a few horses left out, mine and one of the owners, do we leave it there on its own or anyone elses for that matter? or what about Yard owners who throw their toys out of the pram amd give you 24hrs to remove your horse from the yard, (never happened to me thankfully but has to others on my yard). any other weird stuff happened to you? i'm sure i'm not a minority!

sounds like someone i no that !! im not on that yard as i got 24 hrs notice to get off if that... they think coz they own a yard they can willytate your life... i would just say do your own horse but tell the pters on your farm that your not doin this to be mean you just dont mant trouble. I agree with you wen you say they are happy to take our money but they dont supply us with our needs. i am now on a fantastic yard wer we all help each other nd it is owned by a farmer so we can get on with wat we need to do with out him interferin and he certainly dosnt rip us off ...!

Maybe Dosierosie it was not the livery owner dictating your life as you put it but maybe just wanted the yard to run smoothly. As a livery yard owner it's mostly the liveries themselves that cause the problems by not knowing how to look after their horses properly. It,s funny how apparently people are always being ripped of!!! but think that people also forget everything that has been done for them. I do not rip my liveries off, they pay for what they get and also if they want me to do something they pay me to do it. That's what I class as fair considering it is my time. I always make sure my liveries horses are safe and hope they don't end up in a situation where they may get hurt IE: from bad fencing etc.

As I run a livery yard I felt that I needed to comment. I would like to say that although livery yard owners try their best they cannot please everyone. It really is a thankless job and whatever you do you will never please everyone all of the time. I have found with some liveries that they do not come to their horses till late evening and it is expected that the livery yard owner will see to their horses. IE: Feed and turnout. However, when the livery yard owner charges for services they moan and say they are being ripped off. WHY???. Do they just expect everything to be done for free? Maybe some of the liveries who moan alot should come to see to their own horses and do what is required rather than moan and whine about everything. I help my liveries all the time from getting ready for shows, plaiting up etc to feeding and turning out every morning. It really is unfair to expect anybody to see to other peoples horses for nothing. The simple solution is to always see to your own horse and turn up to see to it at a decent time, not leave it all day and expect the livery yard owner to do everything.

i too run a livery yard , and it is not the easiest of jobs ! i work full time like most of the liveries , but they still seem to think i am there all day and at their beck and call 24/7 ...and then moan whan they have to pay for the services i offer I would imagine dosierosie that you did something to really upset the yard owner/ livery owner to have to leave so quickly ?

I must agree with squirrel, irish and sherry. I also run a livery yard and the liveries are more trouble than they are worth. However, the liveries I have at the moment are great and appreciate what I do for them. We all get on very well as equals and have a really good laugh. I have had some bad liveries though that thought I was there at their disposal 24 hours a day, even though I to work full time. My main problems with previous liveries has been that they want everything for nothing but cannot seem to look after their own ponies. In the case of dosierosie and the 24 hours notice, you must have upset the owner alot for that to happen. I have myself asked some people to leave at very short notice but with very good reason. However, the people already were planning to leave without telling me and therefore giving me no notice at all so in the end I think they get what they deserved. I at least knew the horses would be ok but could not care less about the liveries.

A few months ago i took on my own yard to run as a livery yard and have to say its more difficult than many of you may think! There are alot of opinions to deal with and i try my very best to keep eveyone happy, but am afraid this is not always possible. Therefore i endevour to provide a service that i no i would be happy with if i was a livery (not the owner). I work full time and have my own horses on the yard . I think sometimes people think you take a certain action etc to personally offend them and dont always look at the bigger picture. However i have the luxury that my yard has only 8 stables therefor runs rather smoothly(not to many opinions lol)

pennyh that is sooo strange!!! we used to have a girl and her pony but she sometimes wouldnt turn up ad we'd phone to say her horse is waiting but she jsut said she would be up later, she turned up at 10pm. she was awful, our phonebill was just to her!!! she just expected us to turn her horse etc!!! once her mum came up late and dark and got the horse in but you had to walk up a road - its not far but she only had a torch and it was dark and horse got loose, and i had to go and help as she couldnt catch it, not only was this dangerous to her, the horse and cars!! my mum owns a livery yard and its only across the road from her house so max security plus locks on gates into yard but this guy complains there are too many gates!! we are only trying to keep the animals secure and he complains about dung pile but we cant move it til the horses are moved and it is not the right time to do it!! you just cant please everyone!! as for thr rule of feeding everyone's horses, get off their a** and do it theirselves!! why have diy if your not gonna do it yourself?? xxxx

Here Here! We're going to be taking over a livery yard in a few weeks and living on site. And because we know people will want to take advantage of us being there we're going to charge for us doing such things as putting out etc. Not much maybe only a couple of quid a horse per week, but thats still a bale of hay or straw for us We used to be on a livery yard where come 9pm the owner used to turn off all the water, then not turn it on again till maybe 8 the next day, was not good if you were going home late form shows or getting up early and couldn't get water for the horses!

Thats a great way of making money Wish i could liveries like that. Speaking as a livery yard owner i have to admit thats its difficult to adhere to everyones needs but all the same there is always going to be some conflict at a yard, either owners or liveries

A friend of mine runs a livery yard - most of the owners are OK but the other day a new owner was complaining bitterly because her mare had very bad sweet itch. She reckoned she was paying good money and her mare was obviously being neglected, saying it was the YO's fault because the hedges hadn't been cut for a while, which was the cause of the sweet itch.

I consider myself to be very lucky. I have horses at home and three are on livery, why? the yard is a great social place, the owner and other liveries are really kind and the best bit is that my horses are charged at £25 per week, incl haylage and the owner turns out and brings in and there is an almost olympic size school. And ( just to rub it in ) the owner puts rugs on and off. I dont know how he makes a living. I should add that I have been on some dire, dangerous and expensive places which have made me feel like giving up, usually due to the inconsiderate liveries, not yard owners.

I have recently had some liveries who thank god have now left. They became very threatening and insulting. Threatening my family and also saying they would make my life hell. Granted they did that for a while but what goes around comes around. I tried my best to make everything ok but without success. I recently found out that they had been on many yards and caused trouble on every one they had been on. Some people are just never happy whatever you do. My yard is a lovely small and friendly yard but one, two or possibly three??? bad apples can definatley ruin it. I found out the hard way but never again. I would rather have empty stables than liveries who cannot look after their ponies and take great pleasure from making someones life hell.

Well I suppose I could see this from both sides.
As a livery I used to get really upset that the YO would insist all livery horses were off the fields by end September, but her 6 got turnout all year round in the same fields. And yards where they go through the barn to choose their hay bales, and give cr*p (and I mean rubbish -mouldy/black/damp) ones to the liveries as that is all they can provide, but then say that we aren't allowed to source from elsewhere.
Then again as a YO, I've known liveries do moonlight flits to avoid paying a month's rent arrears, and ones who took a whole 300y stretch of posts & fencing overnight. But my pet hate is leaving one horse alone in a field, be that done by liveries or yard owners, all horse folk should know better than to do that. One even had a friend bring her horse in and leave my youngster out alone for hours. The reason - the friend had brought her horse so they could go for a ride together and put it in my horse's clean stable. They didn't think I would be back in time to find out this had been going on.

Well let's put it this way we had a dissagreement and to be fair when there ringin you at four in the morning swearing and giving abuse whilst drunk threatening to tie my pony to a gate if I wasn't there at six and all because people listen to roomers and bit*hyness of others isn't very proffessional at all leaveing abusive answer phone messages so have to disagree there even though I do know how it may seem and can I just say I'm not the only one.

OMG after reading all that lot I will never ever moan abou tour yard again ! I moan usualyy as we are very very waterlogged and muddy ...but the YO's are lovely people have known them 20 years and they would really do anything to help...especially have hepled me in crisises ! I would never expect them to turn mine out or bring in or anything I do everything myself ,and only live very close by.
The liveries are great too, we do occasionally have disagreements over trivia really but never fall out, been there 5 years nearly now and would never move ! The yard before that was lovely too owned by a very fair lady who I am still good friends with now , again a happy 11 years there...only moved cause she sold up.
So as I said ...am never gonna whinge again...we may not have best facilities and its a mud bath at times, but generally its a happy place and we all get along , most of the liveries have been friends for getting on 25 -30 years .
We have had a few wierdos who have upset the apple cart a times but they are gone and its all a happy bunch now... I feel lucky ;D

I have been on yards from hell, at one place we were told when to take the horses off the fields for the winter, fair enough we had the winter turnout......didn't we....... it had been recovering from the last winters turnout all summer and had a nice haze of grass all over....what happened......Farmer decides he will put his calves on it, so in a week there was nothing left for the horses all winter!!!!. Another time years ago at the same place, they had had a bad summer and it was said that hay would be in short supply, Farmer as it happens made just as much hay as normal, but what did he do, put the hay up to £8 this was when small bales were around £1 a bale, hasten to add bought my own in and stored in our garage. Freaky liveries as well who only came under the cover of darkness, and others that didn't come at all, but when challenged said they came after all had left....not so.... one of the horses of the missing owners had an injury in the field was brought in by us and Vet called by Farmer, that horse was in a stable for over a week before she turned up still protesting she had been when we weren't there, until Farmer said where is your horse now then, in the field she said, bulls**t we all said hahahha, she was charged for the hay and straw and the looking after of her horse, amounted to a fair bit, but she did a moonlight flit before she paid. So now we have been on our own place for 10 years, and to be honest I sometimes miss the company but I have only to remember what happened when I was on a yard to stop myself reminiscing ;D ;D
