Please can anyone give me advice on how to improve my lead rein pony in the show ring? She tends to go with her head slightly raised and it just looks untidy in the ring. How do I keep her head down without me interfering and when my little jockey has not got the strength to keep a firm contact in place yet! I don't want to stand her in side reins for hours as one person told me to do!!! What can I do at home to improve her way of going.

I did loads of lunging and hacking on the lead!
Lots of work with out the child, will get her used to how she should go, I did use elastic side reins but not stood in the stable, just while she is out working to give her the idea of how she should carry herself, not too tight else she will just lean against them.
Make sure she is coming through from behind, as she will naturally drop her head carriage then, as lead rein ponies can be a bit lathargic sometimes!
Hope this helps!!

Thank you, I do alot with my child everyday hacking etc and we work her in side reins. I just thought there may be more tricks of the trade to help us along the way! I understand what you mean about her working from behind - we shall make her work more forward rather then going at her speed!! Thanks again.

try a standing martingale for short periods of time , that encourages correct head carraige .

If you do some groundwork at home with an equibalancer or similar that should help. Also quick tip get your jockey to hold the saddle as well as the reins it will help keep the pony in an outline, little LR jockeys are'nt strong enough to hold a pony in an outline and this helps.

Sorry Magsbypickles thats going to cause neckache!! Longreining may help the pony to work from behind but I would never force an outline, just encourage and work correctly and it will come.
