Help!! my friend rode my boy today in the school (not quite a menage but a barked area on a very slight slope) I was tacking up inside - heard her shout went out and he was lying down... Not sure if he slipped or just kind of collapsed, she wasnt sure. He had a look around himself and got up. I got on him and he seemed fine - walked trotted and had a quick canter. It isnt the best surface so I am always careful with him but I have noticed when riding him sometimes on any surface his back legs kind of slip under him. Never on the front always behind, not a lameness more like them giving way. He wees quite a bit, I think he has always done this. Just wondered if anyone has any ideas at all

Have you had back and saddle checked recently?

Odd then, because my first thought was some kind of back thing, maybe a trapped nerve or something which is only affecting him with a riders weight on his back. Would be tempted to have the vet or a back specialist take another look?

Another thought, is he shod on the back, does it make any difference whether he has shoes on or not?

Yes its like a trapped nerve kind of thing - a sudden jolt that makes him loose his footing... he isnt shod at all - he never has been and we have very smooth tarmac here his feet wear well. He is careful walking up a stone path but seems happy in his feet apart from that

Could be cold back. Put saddle on and tighten girth very slowly whilst walking around.(Takes two!)

Thanks merlod.... I thought the cold back would only affect him at the start - this can happen after an hour sometimes or am I wrong
