I get this quite regularly and know how painful it is. I got mine falling off head first a few years back and its become a 'weak' spot so it can happen just by sleeping slightly awkwardly on it or turning quickly. It could be a muscle or a trapped nerve. If I were you I would see an osteopath, they will soon put it right, in the meantime try applying deap heat (stinks you WILL be antisocial!!) and massage in the affected area, it will soothe it. Take ibuprofen to take down any inflammation. If you have a hot water bottle or one of those wheaty bags that you heat in the microwave, put that around it while you are sat down it will help relax it too. You may find you look like a little old lady but it does help X Hope it gets better soon It might not be in your neck though, mine is down my shoulder but affects my neck.

You can get special pillows designed to keep the head and neck at the correct angle while sleeping, physio or osteopath would sell them.

I had whiplash--round in a circle many years ago, it felt like my head was wobbly on my neck, caused by trying to stop a runaway pony whose jockey was terrified
Over the years it has caused problems, putting a neck support collar on in bed definitely helps

Since suffering several bad falls off horses, I've got a permanently bad neck/back, some days are better than others but something ever so slight can set me off and thats it-I'll be in agony for a week. Basically, I've the injuries and ailments of a 60 yo even though I'm only 16 lol. I find my beany 'beddy bear' what you heat up in the microwave helps a lot to loosen the muscles, and ibuprofen if it's particularly painful.
