Oh no, this happened to us! We were able to spread the cost over our next bills instead of paying a massive chunk. Maybe you should see if you could do the same if it would help.

Just be careful and phone them quickly to sort it or many councils just send it all straight to court. I was 'late' paying my council tax this year, I pay it all in one go and at £2400 I think its pretty steep! well they wanted payment for 2011/2012 by april 2011, I phoned to pay it on 20th april and was told it had gone to court and was now with the bailiff!!!! So I had to pay their charges too!!! I think the councils have a cheek expecting payment in advance!

ring them quick and offer a payment plan, in the past i have had issues and threatened with court action due to a not so helpful bank, but if you keep in touch and make an arrangement to pay most companies etc will help you, though am finding the councils and council tax people are being very quick with their reminders etc, because they are all skint !!!!!!! Well so are we .......

Firstly banks cannot cancel a direct debit without your say so...So I would be complaining and kicking up a storm to high heaven with them! Don't suppose it is Natwest is it, as they seem to f888 everybody over Can I ask how you didn't notice for 5 months? Do you not get paper statements?

I have kicked up a stomp, £200 has also one missing out of my account thisonth! Argh! Not a happy bunny whatsoever so making a complaint!
I have the account set up at my mums address and the statements go there - my own fault as I should have switched it ages ago! But once the bank is sorted I'll ring them up, Ive paid half so they should allow me to spread it over with next years! I've had no letters though so hopefully it's not gone to court!!!!

Don't get me started on council tax! I had a big row the other day with someone from the council as they had helped themselves to this months payment. I had a payment plan from previous arrears set up to pay £20 a month by dd, and pay my current year over the counter and i'm up to date with all my payments and had paid this months, then i notices on the 25th they had taken out £140 which i hadnt budgeted for and caused 2 other bills to bounce, when i called them up they said that they had sent me letter saying they were going to take the whole lot from dd (i dont recall recieving this letter) and when i suggested that they should need my permission to remove money from my account they told me that because i'd set up a dd (for the £20 arrears payments)that they could take what they wanted as long as they sent me letter. To me this is theft and i made them listen to previous calls where i have stated i specificaly didnt want dd, but apparently they have done nothing wrong and i have to go to my bank to have the money refunded and see if they will waive any charges incurred by my other bills bouncing. Needless to say i have cancelled my dd with the council. I wonder if another company dealt with their customers in this way, how long would they stay in business??? But as it's a government office there's nothing we can do. grrrrr

Madazzy - Councils do seem to have their own laws.......however this is the wording of the DD Guarantee.........
This Guarantee is offered by all banks and building societies that accept instructions to pay Direct Debits • If there are any changes to the amount, date or frequency of your Direct Debit (insert your organisation name) will notify you (insert number of ) working days in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed. If you request (insert your organisation name) to collect a payment, confirmation of the amount and date will be given to you at the time of the request
• If an error is made in the payment of your Direct Debit by (insert your organisation name) or your bank or building society you are entitled to a full and immediate refund of the amount paid from your bank or building society
- If you receive a refund you are not entitled to, you must pay it back when (insert your organisation name) asks you to
• You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by simply contacting your bank or building society. Written confirmation may be required. Please also notify us. I would check with your council on that, ask for a copy of the letter and when it was sent/dated, my sister had alsorts of problems with her council and its always your word against theirs and they are really officious with it. They will never admit to mistakes.
