I am getting a bit paranoid, I lost my old pony to cushings about 8 years ago, she did very well and we kept her going for as long as seemed fair to her. My old horse has had it for about 3 years now he is 30 not on any medication and at the moment is fine. Now low and behold my dog has got it, I have never come across it in dogs before, she is 13 yr old jack russel and has just started on medication today. Does anybody have any advice for the dog I know what Im doing with the ponies but any hints or advice with the dog would be much appreciated. THANKS

Well my dog has been on the medication for approx 3 weeks and the difference is amazing, she has lost weight stopped being sick and is generally much happier, she is playing again.

One of my dogs has had Cushings for about four years now. She is on Vetoryl and when you get the dose right they are lamost like a normal dog. You can buy Vetoryl from Medicanimal on the internet for much less then the vet (ours at least) sells it. The things to avoid are a bit like ponies - sugar is a definate no (and youd be suprised how much sugar is in some dog food). Red meat is not good except for a treat as it increases blood pressure. Get some test strips from the chemist and test the dogs wee now and again for sugar (they can develop diabetes as a secondary condition). Dont worry too much about it - dogs with Cushings do settle down and lead a normal life - the only thing that is different with Poppy is that she does get tired on a walk sometimes and hs to be carried - but she is 11 so that might be a bit of age too. Let me know how you get on - and do pm or ring if you want to talk about it at all.
