Can anybody recommend a good make or saddlery for a dressage saddle? Looking to get my mare one after Christmas and just wondered from experience which are the best?
Looking to get a brand new one.

If you can afford a decent one Sue Carson i would highly recommend she spends time che3cking your horse ,the way it moves, if its ant confirMATION FAULTS, you discuss which saddle would suit you best and cqan try several types to see which suits you and the horse. I have had Albions costing 1900 that wernt a patch on her saddles, but they are expensive, but fantastic. good luck

just had one made through hound, horse and rider in dukinfield by silhouette it was ready only 8 days after my going in to order but we had already tried a few so knew what width and size we wanted.just had to choose colour and type of leather and type of girthing system it is a lovely fit for both pony and rider and it was alot cheaper than any other make and i can take it back for restuffing etc at a later date

There are so many fantastic dressage saddle makes, it is dependent upon the type of horse and your budget. If this is your first dressage saddle, I don't think you should go over £1,000 and actually you should consider trying second hand too, for after you have been riding in one for a while you might think you would like this or that feature and you can pay £3,000 easily. Around the £1K price range, the Bates with changeable gullets are good, as are the Ideal range. As you know Ideal are a great English company and they have a few different design of dressage saddle. Personally I love the Susanna.

Thanks everyone. I have borrowed one for a few months now but want to get a decent one of my own, I lost my Nan and she gave me money to buy one before she died. I have actually just been eyeing up an Ideal Susanna! They are beautiful, but definitely going to have a look around. Thankyou again

Frank Baines. His saddles are beautiful, made to fit your horses perfectly, through detailed measurements taken. If its not right, he will adjust it till it is.
He has fitted two of his saddles to my grey mare Lilly now. Every other saddle I have tried, all good makes, kept slipping forward or sideways on her and gave her a bad back.
She is now a very happy - pain free superstar xx

Georgie's best dressage horse came with a full wardrobe - he used an Albion and it was fab - he competed on Team GB for 7 years in it (not with us unfortunately). The yard he came from use the whole range of Albions and I think they either get them direct from Albion along with the Elevator bridles or they get them from Dressage Delux who are very good.
The only people that I know that have had Sue Carson saddles say the after sales is very bad from them.
Our new horse is in a second hand saddle which was £1k - I think you need to go into it with an open mind (we particularly wanted an Albion) but ended up with a saddle made by an unknown saddler that won a competition with it - it fitted the best and was very comfortable to ride in - you cant ask more than that. So, get a few saddlers out (the saddlers down here charge £50 for a fitting if you dont buy from them) and just try riding in them and see what reaction your horse has to them and how comfortable they are and if they make a difference to your movements/way of going. good luck!

Jeffries for us, I think its the Hawk ? £1200
I have a friend who had a Sue Carson, her horse could never canter in it, not good when your discipline is dressage! There is also a lady on our yard who bought one in the summer, and is pleased with it, however it has to be checked regularly, about every 3 months I think, and its rather expensive every time they come out.

ive just bought a tekna GP - except the sent me a dressage saddle lol. Its lovely! on sale at 179! (brand new!)
I ride B in a barnsby dressage saddle and i LOVE it
I did sit in an ideal jessica and loved it but i couldnt justify the extra cost at the time sadly!
if you want the website for the new teknas let me know! they are 4/500£ + new... so 179 is a bargain and they are lovely!

Laura - I think the very best bet is to get a really good fitter out - brand depends on your preference, the horse's shape and your budget. If you have a wide flat horse then it can be tricky and you may need a specialist, but otherwise get a great fitter out with a good selection of new and used, and see what works.

Spalding saddles are fantastic, I could only afford a secondhand one but would buy a new one if I could. He makes them individually to fit your horse, and uses beautiful leather, very soft and comfortable for you and your horse. He has a website.

I'm probably a bit biased............ but I'd go with the Albion!
To be fair, the saddle is only as good as the person fitting it! Look at the second hand retail value of the saddle, a bit like cars, quality saddles will hold their value!

Thankyou again everybody ;D so nice to hear opinions..
Off to have a look now Kasima. I struggle because all second hand ones seem to be 17-17.5 inches which is too big..
