Today whilst on our way home we came upon two riders riding along a lane two abreast. I have no problem with riders riding two abreast as I have done it myself when riding out with a friend whose horse was very jumpy.
The issue I have was that the rider who was riding in the middle of the road had an extremely loose rein - what my daughter's old riding instructor would have called washing lines. It may be that she has utmost confidence in her pony but no horse is 100% bombproof and I feel it is extremely dangerous to riding with absolutely no contact.
In addition she was turned towards the other rider chatting and we were behind her waiting for a straight part of road so we could get a clear view of the road for quite a few minutes before she even realised we were there.
To her credit when she did spot us she did say thank you which is more than some people do.
Whilst there wasn't a problem, if her pony had spooked she would have struggled to calm it down and as she was not paying attention to her surroundings it is more likely that her pony could spook and she be caught unawares.
As a car driver I believe I, and all other car drivers, have a responsibility to drive safely at all times including around horses using the road. As a rider I believe I, and all horse riders, should have a responsibility to ride safely at all times and in all conditions.

Ooooo this really frustrates me....... My horse is a saint but this does not mean he ain't going to get spooked. I have to say that having been riding for 20years I do feel riding on the road standards have change (not trying to be offensive) As a driver or sometimes a pedestrian I find riders rude, riding on pavements bugs me! And we should respect the cars for slowing down and say thanks. And wear lights people!!!! Our yard is up a long lane that just about fits two cars side by side, one generally stops so another can pass, and there's often milk lorries and chicken lorries ( ) yet people ride double and pull there faces when cars come up because they don't want to have to move! Honestly are people not concerned for their safety!!!!
