Has anyone returned to riding after having an Illisarov/Taylor frame fitted? I had a nasty accident in April last year, which resulted in me nearly loosing my foot. Apparently the only thing that stopped my foot being lost was my Dubarry boots (which had to be cut off ) Anyways because my leg was shattered i had to have a frame put on my lower leg. (some people might have seen me wandering round Equifest!!) The bear trap, sorry cage was removed in September and 2 weeks later I started riding again and was out competing and at training events with my youngsters. I was wondering how soon people returned to riding and how soon I should attempt to jump again!

Not quite the same but my sister broke her lower leg/knee and had metl plates put in she had a frame.. don't know if it was the same.. i know se could not weight bare? for 12 weeks and had it alltered weekly for the angle of her knee... anyway she rides but not as much as she used too..( she is in her mid 40's now) and this happened a good ten yrs back.. she went showing and jumped local level
I suppose you know your injury better than anyone else and see what you have been advised.. they told my sister she would end up with a stick and possibly a chair.. she never used any after she was right. so to speak. hope this helps in some way

Hi, I know its been a while since you posted your thread but still wanted to reply. I broke my ankle in seven places, dislocated it and ruptured the joint capsule on June 6th 1994 and spent seven weeks in a non-weight bearing cast waiting to see whether I would walk normally again. Stick at the physio exercises long after your appointments end and swim as much as you can. My consultant advised me not to try the grand national or badminton within a year but to take it slowly and build up gradually. I am the big four zero next month and in the last six months I have shown, hunted, gone competitive cross country, show jumped, shown in hand and schooled professionally. Not to mention hiking with scout groups in competitve situations over distances up to seventeen miles! I do take supplements and if the ankle is stiff I do the old physio exercises then ice pack and put the foot up. Oh and you need boots with a zip up the back as I find if I jump in hot weather it gets puffy and I have to ice the outside of the boot to get it off. Driving 120 miles home after a show wearing a boot and a flipflop is not a good look! Go nuts I am!!

I broke my knee 2 years ago, I had a cast on for about 8/9 weeks & was back on board the day after having it off! Rode none stirrups/bare back for about 2 weeks then was back to riding properly a week later (had no choice really, had a show that weekend! It was my choice to go, my mum dint mind but I wanted to go.) but it took me a about 10 months to be able to ride properly again. Make sure you build your leg back up (eg. going to the gym, pilates etc) before/whilst getting used to being back on board, I made the mistake of just getting back on & getting on with it. I found that I was putting no/very little weight on the leg I broke for about 12 months as I was very cautious of it, then I starred putting too much weight on it as I was trying too hard to put weight on it, making my riding suffer. It was about 18 months before my riding was back to normal. I still have problems with it now, some times I have excruciating pain in my knee for absolutely no reason, I find it difficult to walk on it sometimes. The cold affects it a lot aswell. Hope this was of some help.

I shattered my tibial plateau and knee cap about 10 years ago, I had cage on and was non weight bearing for 18 months and on cruthes for 2 1/2 years, before breakng my leg I competed at county level showing and riding club level jumping, I'm now a happy hacker and do inhand showing at riding club level as I get frustrated when I ride as I'm now no longer as effective in the saddle as I was before. I broke my ankle in April last year and bought myself a new horse, my requirements were he must stand still to get on and not need too much leg, he's great I've ridden him more in the last 4 months than I had the past 9 years and am hoping to compete him in some ridden veteren classes this year. I'm in agongy for couple of days after a longer hack and avoid rising trot as much as possible but decided horses and riding are my life and worth being in pain for
