I have a now 4 year old that I am going to show as a lwt hunter. This season I plan on doing a few local shows then doing the 4yr olds and towards the back end of the season a few novices and leave the weighted classes until she matures a bit more in a season or so time. What headgear should I show in? she goes sweet in just a plain loose ring snaffle. xx

If your doing aff Hunter 4yr old classes 99% of them will be in a pelham or double. You will need your patey/ beagler depending on show rules as some shows insist in straps now. If your doing unaff stick with your strapped hat and dont move to your strapless until you can trust her, but its personal choice as a lot of the pros are moving towards strapped hats now.

cheers arragorn. I tend to show in a patey anyway, but with regards to headgear i ment bridle. (sorry should have written that really!! lol x) what sort of pelham should i try her in, it would be at the county shows. she is really soft mouthed, and being an impulsive person i have already put my double on her and walked her round the menage, she hated it!!!! lol poor pony having me as a mum!! lol

In novice classes you will need to be in snaffle I believe and at local I wouldn't worry too much about having two reins. I'd stick with the snaffle she's happy in personally for at least this season, it'll save upsetting her

I'd keep her in a snaffle as well. She's a novice 4 year old who should be in a snaffle. I don't like to see 4 or even 5 year olds in Pelham's or doubles, but that's just my opinion! Good luck with her.

A few I have been to have had novice classes with horses in pelhams. When I asked why this was the answer i got was "it is up to the rider to put the horse in a bit that is best suited to it whether it be a novice or an experienced one" Just pre-warning you, I think though a novice horses should be in a novice bit personally. Think of it as putting a child in high heels.......

If she's happy in a snaffle, for novices, keep her in it
