title says all! i've rode stirrupless before and i don't know why because i can do it but i just have this fear of riding stirrupless (please note my pony is rather fast) and she never bucks/rears ect, she's really good but she's just speedy!! what can i do to get my confidence riding stirrupless without gripping to dear life on my saddle, hahaha!

Whats the worst that could happen?...you slip out the side door We run the risk of falling off every time we ride why is this any different lol? Oh I forgot to add, try doing it on the lunge first so you dont have to worry about where your horse is going

Just start off slowly, do five minutes of walk riding transitions and moving her round the school. I tends to be easier to control the pace in sitting trot as you can close your thigh a touch and stop the forward motion. Have a neck strep if you want or hold on to some mane if you feel a bit wobbly. The main thing is to relax! if you grip on for dear life, you'll bounce. Think heavy and sink into the saddle. Good Luck!

have you tried bareback or even on a rug? Cerys gets really worried if I ask her to ride without stirrups, yet trots around the field happily sitting on her pony's rug!

Just practice and get used to it. I actual prefer bareback to riding without stirrups. Even if you just walk until your used to it then move up to trot. I always ride without stirrups or without a saddle, it does wonders for balance

well i actually find cantering easier than trotting without stirrups, it's when she's slowing down from canter to trot she goes quite speedy and rushy and i just lose my balance! thanks for all your advice, really helped!X

Definitely agree, have a go on the lunge! Then you don't have to panic about keeping control as much Riding without stirrups is great for your balance, I try to ride without stirrups at least once a week even if its just for 2 minutes up the lane!

Well done. Work without stirrups is no where near as people think it will be! I find it easier without. Unfortunatly you have to ride with stirrups for most disciplines! lol
