Well you can't please everybody, I have never experienced Mr. Parker Jones's judging but the impression I get is of an open and honest person who has nothing to hide. So maybe it's good PR if nothing else!

I have to say we showed in hand under Mr Parker Jones several years ago, were placed 3rd - he explained exactly what he did and didn't like about the pony and we came away very happy with the result, no complaints at all - very fair, straight and honest, wish there were more like him Stood under him recently myself, did not know him, although a friend of mine said he was very fair, he did'nt let me down, we won, he then proceeded to tell me why he liked my mare, and what her weak point was, could'nt have agreed more, I know the weak spot, and know the strengths, nice to get an honest appraisal with no flannel. I was'nt placed in the champ, knew why, and would stand under him again, we really could do with a bit more blatant transparency and confidence in the judgement in this game.

It's very heartening to see these nice comments about Mr PJ and I agree. I probationed with him a fair while ago and was amazed at how much he could see in 3 mins of looking at confirmation of a stripped horse. Very knowledgable and fair.
But how many competitors do not take the judges comments with good grace. For as many that accept constructive criticism or comments there are the same who do not or worse throw back abuse or rude behaviour. And before you say it there are some judges who are less than diplomatic with their comments, I agree. So can we all just agree to be respectful and polite to each other in all walks of life? How hard can it be?

At the end of the day ..................... 1. All horses and ponies are individuals, as are their riders/handlers, and therefore different from each other. 2. All Judges likes and dislikes are different, even though they have a breed standard to go by. 3. All finalists at HOYS and Olympia have already been Judged to be SOME OF THE BEST in the country even though each one is slightly different. 4. We all know, deep down, that our own prize-winner has flaws, if only a few, and that there is no such thing as a perfect pony. 5. Yes, Judging is subjective and the sooner the Judge bashers realise this the better it will be for us all. 6. Yes, there is a certain amount of corruption in showing (including dog & cat showing etc.) as there is in all walks of life - it seems to be 'part of life' these days. 7. As long as showing exists there will always be people knocking Judges purely BECAUSE Judges judge, and no amount of changes/suggestions can put a stop to dishonesty, nepatism (sp?) and corruption, sorry!! 8. Ever wondered what these 'judge bashers' were like as children? I bet they had to have the best dolls/bikes/houses etc. and were bl**dy horrid to their neighbours kids!!!

There's been a few posts about 'facey' Judging on here lately so I thought I'd just add this:
'Facey' judging isn't as common or obvious at local or Riding Club level. I'm afraid I'm just the opposite, perhaps too much so:
When the entries come into the ring I study each animal as it goes past me making a mental note of it's initial/first impression. I might point out one or two to my steward that I could be concerned about re. their behaviour etc. but I can honestly say I never look to see who is riding them.
This continues right the way through the go round and it's only when each animal is brought to stand before me and I say 'good morning' that I may notice whether the rider is a boy or girl.
A few weeks ago I had a beautiful little pony come under me, well ridden and very true to type. Now, I do not have a lot of time for the pony's connections but I just HAD to put it first and later made it Champion which must have come as a shock to all. It was a challenge - but I felt good about it afterwards. You have to forget personal feelings at such times and prove to yourself as well as everyone else that you are a fair Judge.
I may recognise a pony from previous shows and know it's form but that's as far as it goes. Some exhibitors have found that I don't give a d*mn who they are and I will only place as I see fit. Acquaintances have found that a phone-call the night before doesn't work, neither trying to chat to me before the class as I avoid that at all costs, and afterwards.
I have developed a very thick skin over the years and also lost a few so-called 'friends' along the way, but I'm sure no-one could ever call me a 'facey' Judge.
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

P.S. An eminent male Judge who is on several different panels has asked me more than once to become a probationer on the BSHS panel but I have always declined. I've seen so much back-stabbing and brown-nosing (sorry to be so crude!) going on over the years that I just wouldn't enjoy it nearly as much as I do my local level Judging.
