I would like to show my NF in-hand over the winter - he lives out & is starting to lose his summer coat already, is it possible to stop his coat becoming too woolly by rugging him up or would I be fighting a losing battle?

Haha, it seems like a losing battle most of the time, but if you can make it work then it really is worth while.
Although my mare lived in, we used to rug her up to the 9's and it always seemed to work. All i will say is with him living out it will be harder to keep him from developing a winter coat, and it will become apparent on his legs etc etc.
However, you could always try, and if it became to much you could have him clipped, aslong as you also kept him rugged 24/7. I would say use a lycra rug, a thick and feild proof one, then start using a thin turnout now. As it gets colder you can just put him in heavier rugs, with necks and see how it does?
Is worth a try anyway!

I believe you can rug all you like, it's the amount of daylight that the eye takes in that triggers a coat to grow or to be cast

we are rugged up in middle weights now, and the lights are left on in the stables until at least 10pm
