Well a week before Xmas I got a letter from hmrc telling me that my paye had been wrong for 2 years and I owed them nearly £2400!!! Needless to say I nearly died and thought how on earth could I pay that back, so I looked online for some advise which said to check the figures against my records and write to them. So I did, I got copies of my p60s and p11d (I have a staff mortgage at work!) and guess what things didn't match.
So just got a letter today with my now amended figures ( the right ones!) and a cheque for £200!!!! So after they ruined my Xmas thinking I had to pay them they actually owed me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'

If u find the number online if your calling from abroad they answer it straight away, and it's not 0845 so it's free!!! That's what I did when I rang them!!

They don't even appoligise for their mistake! And the most annoying part is they can say whatever they want and it's up to us to prove its wrong!!! I've spent ages on the phone to them and had to write 4 letters!!!!

We had a letter in November saying that the PAYE was incorrect and we owed them well over a £1,000. Phoned up immediately and the bod said yes it did look a bit odd and he would forward it to their other department to deal with. Xmas eve we got exactly the same letter again with the notification. This time we wrote back immediately with all the evidence attached notices going back to 2005 stating that they owed us money it was so clear it was idiot proof but yes you've guessed it we havn't heard a thing yet. Still Hoping though !!! They seem to make the rules up as they go along

My OH has been overpaying NI payments for nearly 4 years, he works abroad and does not need to pay NI any longer, we got in touch with them 6 months ago and they agreed that they owed him in the region of £10,000 and that yes he shouldnt have been paying it Yet here we are 6 months down the line and still waiting for a refund, they have even said it could take a further 6 months before we receive it

My husband was on an emergency tax code when he started his job in October. He hadn't paid tax earlier in the tax year as he was a student teacher until September, so hadn't paid any tax at all in 2011-12 until October. He gave in his P45 from previous employer (not really relevant due to different tax year) and also filled in P46 just in case, but STILL ended up on emergency code and paying WAY too much tax. Contacted payroll dept and also local tax office who just said basically the system can't handle people starting jobs part way through a tax year and everyone ends up on emergency codes until they have at least one pay packet and only after that do they sort it. But, by then you've overpaid and won't get it back unless you scream and shout! I cannot for the life of me understand why HMRC cannot see he hasn't yet paid any tax all year, so should not be paying as much as he is now. Also, in the past when I have moved jobs during a tax year - why can't HMRC see what I've already paid in the past? I have rung them up to correct overpayments and they asked me to post them my P60 or P45 as evidence - why haven't they got records of my P60/P45 in a tax year?!?! The whole system is shocking and designed to scam individuals who haven't got the time or knowledge to faff about. Its a scandal in my opinion.

The bit that really gets me as a small employer is "The website is temporarily down but if you fail to file online before due date you will be fined"
