My mare is very sensative can only wash her in certain shampoo's, all the way through the summer she has a to have claratin in her tea as she just rubs all her self (although she hasn't got sweet itch as we have had vets opinion and he says she has something like COD) anyway for a while she has had a lump under her fur and after clipping her last friday it has now being revealed. Personally i think it is a build up of scurf as her coat previously was so thick and she loves it when i itch it. HOWEVER i clipped her on friday and her clip is quite short, and monday i notcied she had small little lumps on her neck shoulder and flanks so have kept my eye on them and today they are alot worse... I bought a different tail spray but that was not last weekend but the weekend before, i put her a lickit in her stable on monday night but she has had them before, and i bought her a new rug and prior to purchase it had been washed - however she has been away from it since monday as at first i thought it was heat rash. i have asked a few people on the yard and they have said they think it is an allergic reaction as so do I. so i have started her on claratin again (recommended by vets) and i will see. Have any of you experienced this before, and do you think it is an allergic reaction many thanks

Think this is urticaria or commonly known as nettle rash. I have had it a lot with newly clipped horses think it's a reaction to the clipper oil it will just subside in a day or two so don't panic. Have also had it with change of hay or new field but then the lumps have been a lot bigger sometimes as big as saucers. It's definitely an allergy to something but not life threatening but very alarming when they seem to appear from nowhere

I agree, coming up in these sort of bumps is quite common after clipping!

Get your vet to test her for allergies. They could be anything from protien lumps to allergic to something in her food. We had one that was allergic to carrots and certain haylage.

it could also be a reaction to your clipper oil. we had one with sensitive skin who reacted in a similar way

Nice to read this thread as I have just seen two lumps that look the same as your pictures - Not recently clipped but started to be turned out into a new field. What or how are these treated? How many clarityn do people give the ponies/horses - we have a Sec D?

my mare gets them when clipped, but she did get one from a allergic reaction to a bite once on her back and any pressure on it made her bronk

Seen this many times after clipping ,it's usually from the clipper oil . I put a handful of Epsom salts in the feed which gets rid of the lumps.

We have a mare that gets exactly these lumps if she is given any feed with anything other than a very low protein level in it, grass nuts set them off a treat. I gave her a minimal amount a few weeks ago as they were all getting stir crazy over lack of grass, everyone else is fine, but even passing her bucket past the grass nuts bin sets her off, as they have a high protein level (25%), perhaps time of year coupled with an intolerence to something in the feed is setting it off. I know from experience you can say 'well nothing has changed in the feed' but for whatever reason, a trigger is released and it is then a process of elimination.
