We had this problem with our Exmoor after he had time off for physio. He was so lazy that it was impossible to work him properly to get him fitter. I had his teeth checked, shoes refitted & bought a new, fully fitted, saddle - there were issues wuth each of these areas but not enough to have any affect on stamina/energy levels. I am currently feeding him Spillers Instant Response Energy which seems to be helping (according to his jockey) - at least now she can get him going forwards enough to work on his fitness.

Before you start shoveling high protein foods down it, get a good instructor to make sure there is nothing wanting in its schooling, a few lessons with a good instructor is far cheaper in the long run than over loading its system with protein and risking lamanitis

not sure if its the same problem but...
We had a 14.2 who could only ever do one class at a show with no working in as she used to run out of steam so quickly. We ended up giving her Iron supplement (liquid form) which seemed to help alot!

I have a cob who is very lazy but will hunt for 3 hours no probs but cant walk out up the road or in the school! Food is not the answer and whoever rides ends up looking like a beetrote so we lunge him tice a week on the pessoa - it does wonders and he has lost weight and now works out and works out better than ever. It is in his mind - he doesnt want to do it and he knows we wear down quicker than he does! Try it!!
