Hi all. My rising 4 year old is not responding by me asking her to trot, she does have locking stifle problem but she needs the work to build up, i cant sit on her fully ive got to stand up in the stirrups for 5 minutes for her to get used to my weight...and the trot is a no no at the min with her, do i carry on riding her for ten mins in walk and not rush her? she has been seen by my vet and he says work and so does my physio. oh she is lunged and warmed up before i get on her x

hmmm, are you 100% sure you're warming her up correctly on the lunge? i'd just try continuing with that if i'm honest before getting back on her, it could be because she's getting back in to work? hope you find out what the problem is.

I take it she has recently been broken being that she is a 4yo, do you mean she doesnt know what you are asking of her ie going off the leg? With locking stifles turn out is key, standing in doesnt really help.

mmmmm , how often does her leg / legs lock , irealise now how much discomfort my mini must have been in since i had him operated for locking stifle , he couldnt move sideways as in moving over , and very rarely trotted , it was usually walk or very sedate canter , and never bounced around or really played with the others , but now hes a cheeky little monkey and hes flying around all over the place , mind you he was a severe case and i had no option but to have the op, work is ideally the answer , but if your horse is only getting a short amount of out time , as a youngster , with this problem you maybe asking too much , i personally would steer clear of lunging as you are asking a lot of the stifles on a small circle ,walking in hand sounds good , at least then you know that you are not putting weight on the joints at the moment ,i know they are supposed to grow out of it , but if this is still continuing to happen , you may need to seek further advice , so that you dont cause any other problems , good luck

longreining and (lunging on large circles) with a schooling aid to encourage her to be long and low in her outline to get her stretching i wouldnt ride her until she has her muscle bulk mass established. try leading her ff another horse if poss t help get her muscled up. this wil take min 8 wks t get a nice muscle and she must b encuarged to b worked in a low outline

I wouldn't lunge at that age either. Why would you not lunge at that age ? Is the mare well built or thin ? as with locking stifles you need a good amount of weight on the horse.

hi all thank you for reading and replying fanfarefan she doesnt lock everyday but when she locks she locks good and takes a good five mins of backing up or simply just waiting for her to sort it out herself ( she seems to be good at this) she can go for days without locking then.. i do lunge her in the pen we have at the stables and shes quite happy in there but there is going to be more long reining for defo. thanks for the advice everyone x

I also agree that lunging could put too much strain on her joints and would avoid it for the time being. I prefer not to lunge ponies until they're at least 4, whether they have stifle problems or not. Regarding the pony's weight, while horses in poor condition can be prone to this, I'd put that down to lack of quality muscle. Your pony should be fit but not carry excess weight, as this too can put more of a strain on joints.

With the locking stifle a lot of walking in hand over poles and lunging trotting over poles helps and a lot of hill work just in walk as to help her stifle you need her to build her muscles up in her legs to support the bone.
Ive had experience with this with a traditional i had and with plenty of hill work and walking and trotting over poles stopped it as there was enough muscle to support the bone this was advised by my vet.
