I have two dogs Jack & Tilley, they are Lhasa Apso's and they both went the dog groomers last Thursday, since then they keep messing everywhere, by everywhere I mean they have their own space where they sleep and where go when we're out, it's a large warm cloak room with access to the kitchen but there is a baby gate up so they can see in to the kitchen but can't get in there. Anyway they have never messed before and now they are peeing and pooing eveywhere! Any ideas why? It's definitly since they have been clipped? :-(

Hi it maybe a possibility they have been in a crate for a while in the groomers and messed in there so now they are back to square one with the training, how old are both of them? It sounds like you'll have to catch one of them wee'ing, say no loudly and straight out with both of them, oh dear it sounds like all your work training them has taken a backward step, it does happen and i have a couple of min pins who are 9 months old they did it at around 8 months...keep on top of it and they'll soon remember...x

When they were puppies I used to use crates and when they stopped messing in their crates I no longer used them and they never messed in their room either, not sure whether I should put them back in crates again even though I feel mean doing this??

After the groomers they have returned smelling differently, their reaction is to mark where they live , its a dominance thing.

Even worse today, my husband has just been home to let the dogs out and when he brought them back in he had left the baby gate open in to the kitchen / room and Tilley ran straight in, jumped on the sofa and pee'd on the sofa in front of the husband!! Eeek not good :-(

Both dogs are now back in crates while we're out of the house and through the night and they are not messing in their cages at all

I am having similar problems with my Two at the moment. We moved house last September and everything has been fine until the last month or so. Every morning when I go into the kitchen one of them has had a wee. They are walked Three times a day, but are still having a wee overnight and never do it during the day. They are not in a crate, but I am considering it at the moment as I am sick of bleaching the floor every morning.

Well They had been out this morning for a couple of hours and I let them in and I literally turned my back for a minute and Tilley had got through the baby gate and ran straight in the room and pee'd all over my sofa again!! Thank god it's got a fleece cover on it that I can put in the wash! There's just no excuse for that!! I'm really annoyed! :-(

I have ad lots of success with the wee wee pads, they have a scent on them that encourages them to pee on it, try putting one in the cage with them them place one next to the door, mine still use them on a night and its much better than pee all over the house... There both terrible teenagers now with their age, stick with it x

Nearly cried today, I got home and they had managed to knock the gate open which encloses them to their area and they have been out with the full run of the house for hours! So far found poo on the landing upstairs, the spare bedroom and my little girls bedroom, they had peed all over in their room, jack had cocked his leg up the side of my new washing machine and all my carpets are only a few month old! They have been in crates for the last couple of weeks and had made an improvement! I bet they have peed all over too but I just can't see it! I'm so angry! :-(

Peeing and pooping can be caused by stress so maybe they didn't enjoy their trip to the dog groomers, or it could be seperation anxiety if they are mostly doing it when you are out of the house. Or, as jeanslater said, they've returned smelling differently and are so are now marking.
Watch some episodes of It's Me or the Dog, Victoria Stilwell always has really good tips to stop this kind of thing. You do need to constantly supervise them when they're in the house though really in order to stop it, so you can monitor when they look like they are about to go. I think Victoria usually distracts them with a loud noise like a clap and then whisks them out immediatly. They usually get the hint quite quickly! In the meantime, are you able to leave them in your garden when you're out during the day? Ours sleep in at night but I only ever leave them in the house on their own if I'm literally only popping out for 20mins or half an hour. They're out in the garden for any longer periods where they have a big cosy kennel, and we lock our garden gate.

Thanks, they have a massive kennel outside which they don't go in so then I feel bad leaving them out incase it rains and they don't go in the kennel! I also worry about them getting stolen. I will watch some of me or the dog and see what I can pick up thanks x

Unfortunately once a dog has peed or pooed on an area, the pheromone smell will remain, and the dogs will continue to go in that area.
By the sounds of it they were originally stressed out by something and are now just continuing to pee in an area that has their scent.
You can get a product called Simple Solutions stain and odour remover which gets rid of the pheromone scent. Along with that and some reminders of where they can pee (by praising and rewarding when they wee outside) they should stop going in the house.
Pets at Home sell it, or you can buy it online. They do ones for soft furnishings and hard floors. Can't recommend it enough.
In the mean time just be really careful which areas you let them in. Cleaning the area with a bleachbased product won't get rid of the pheromone smell, but pure soap powder will do the same job as the Simple Solutions.
Hope that helps.

No probs I only learnt about bleach not removing the smell when I worked at a vets. Not many people realise you need something to get rid of the scent!
