Be honest... Would I look ridiculous taking my youngster to a show in a fulmet style breaking bit? She rides like a pro in it, but put her in anything else and she just wont settle an gets upset with herself and everything just falls apart :/ she's got a very soft mouth so can't have anything harsh and she seems to prefer the fixed cheek, I've tried her in a copper mouthpiece, sweet iron etc and she just settles with the keys in so I'm not sure what to do :/ I'm not bothered about winning t the minute as I just want her to get out and see the sites, but at the same time I want to avoid looking like a fool!
She's had her teeth done recently so that's not an issue.
Any tips please? Or should I just keep her in the breaking bit?

If shes happy in it then Id just keep her in it for now until you've had time to try other options, you wont look like a fool at all.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. You'll see plenty of novices being ridden in cheeked/fulmer bits anyway, and who will know about the keys apart from you?

i break horses/ponys in with a fulmur and show them as novices with them as i think are a excellent bit for babys and if shes happy with the keys then i would leave her for a while. i would maybe try a bit with rollers in as your next step good luck

like MM says 'if it aint broke dont fix it' If shes happy then take her in that bit. Im sure a judge would much rather see a pony happy in its mouth and its way of going that 1 thats uncomfortable in a bit that 'looks better' Good luck with her xx

i think it would look fine after all it will be obvious she is a baby anyway.
a couple of good tips though if you have a young horse that likes keys is to either attach (securley) a small curb chain (scrunched up - if that makes sense!) to the joint in an ordinary snaffle or wrap the inner part of the bit (works for snaffles or pelhams) with shami leather (real shami so it goes soppy when they mouth).
