Start off about half a mile. Depends on how they're feeling. Start off not too far, if they're feeling happy & relaxed go a little further, but not too much, make sure it ends on a good note! Then go a little further each day. We start off just a little walk (1/4 of a mile I should think) & end up about 3 miles. They go out with someone else riding sometimes, they can feel more settled. Although they're all different. Your judgement will never be wrong, just make sure they have happy experiences!

We go for about half an hour to 40 mins round the fields and they are still bright and alert when they get home. (Not every day, but once or twice a week). Just be aware if your pony is quite sharp, the fitter they are when you break them, the bigger the bucks!

Just start going and you'll build up the fitness.
when I got my dales younsgter aged 2, we walked miles and miles - she turned out excellent in all traffic and pretty much bombproof, and very easy to back too

I walk for miles with mine, we are lucky to have fabulous hacking near us where they see just about everything! I am starting walking my colt out this weekend, they just love being out and about so I will be doing it as much as I can to get him used to things, get him handled more and get me fit!! haha x

I take our youngster out for about a mile mile and half every few days , sometimes in hand , sometimes on his own , sometimes in company ,and sometimes leading off my cob , he loves his walks out and it is getting him used to the big world out there ! We are longreining now but I keep those sessions a bit shorter 1/4 mile maybe as I am teaching him commands at the same time here not just a leisurely amble so keep those lessons short and sweet as he has more to think about. He has never tired really he seems to enjoy his work .
