Do you let the mare and foal meet again?? Fern and Roxy have been apart for nearly 12 weeks now. They've not seen each other once since then. I started riding Fern lightly but it's difficult round our farm and there are lots of hills which I really want to avoid (as she's returning to work from injury). The least steep route is heading towards Roxy's field so i've been going that way and then turning round before she's in sight and going back. I wanted to go further so have been going the other way out of the yard which is a very steep hill. I walk her down this and get on at the bottom and then same on way home, I get off. It would be soooo much easier if we could just go around the block, that would mean passing Roxy's field. Would it be unfair of me to do this. I was planning to do so tomorrow and have asked a friend to supervise Roxy and co when I do. Just wondering what other peoples thought are as i've never done this before and don't want to upset my girls or cause problems.

Hi, I had to take my mare May to a local livery yard so I could wean her foal Tallulah, Tallulah would break through fences to get back to her mum, we separated them for eight weeks, Mays milk dried up and she was fine, Tallulah was fine without mum, we brought May home and the two of them were back together without any problems at all, infact Tallulah has paired up with another mare Lexi, so I think you would be alright now. the mares seem to lose interest when weaning has occured and the foals usually form other friendships,

Well all went perfectly well. What well behaved girls I have. Roxy came to the gate when she spotted Fern but no screaming or anything. Archie beat her to the gate to greet Fern and tbh Fern was more interested in Archie  . Roxy Mouthed to Fern and Fern had a sniff of her and then moved on to her friend Henrietta and then to the spilt hay outside the gate  Got her priorities right that girl of mine. I walked Fern away and continued off back to the yard and she didn't bat an eye lid. Roxy never called or followed either, just looked and stayed with mhairi who was in the field with them just incase she tried to do something silly like climb the gate  To me there's nothing worse than having a pair with separation anxiety as it makes life difficult when you want to do stuff with just one. If things had gone badly today and Roxy went mental i'd have sent her to my friends yard and kept them separate for much longer. They need to learn there independence before it becomes a problem for the rest of there lives. I've been very conscious that Roxy will probably end up living in the same field as Fern for most of there lives so Roxy needs to stand on her own 4 hooves for a while yet. So glad we can ride all the way round the block now. It was a nice change.
