Hi everyone, i was wondering whether people would feel a 16 inch saddle would be too big for a 12hh lead rein show pony for the ring. many thanks

I would have thought so but depends on the pony I suppose, is a 16 inch the right size for the pony or is it that you want a larger seat for the jockey?

No-one can say yes or no without seeing the pony and saddle. You need the correct fit for your pony, and look at different cuts/styles if you want a different seat for your jockey. An ill fitting saddle will just lead to back problems and a very cross pony.

A lead rein pony is under 12hh so unless the pony in question has a very very long back I would say too big! The saddle should not sit beyond the last rib of the horse as a general indicator

I do sometimes fit 12hh ponies with 16" saddles but it would more likely be a 14-15" and with a tiny jockey that size would look neater. It may depend on the detail of the saddle as well - some look "more saddle" than other, some feel more secure for little riders than others.....just make sure the back of the saddle doesn't sit too low, a common mistake with many showing saddles.

I would probably say a 15inch sounds better however we haven't seen the length of the ponies back, etc our old SP FR had a 16 inch saddle however she was long in the back & we had a 9 year old jockey not a lead rein jockey! If you yourself are not sure get a saddler out to make sure the pony is in the best comfort possible.
ETA that it also depends on how you want the saddle to look, some prefer a neat smaller saddle & others prefer the "bulkier" type with bigger flaps, etc. However I'm sure a 16" could fit but if you really are unsure get a saddler out.
