I have a five year old Welsh D mare, she is a pleasure to ride, and her flatwork is coming along really nicely. She is responsive to the leg and has a lovely soft mouth. She has the occasional snort and prance around but is generally very well behaved. But when I attend a show I really struggle to get her to stand still when standing up for the judge or saluting at the end of my individual. Does anyone have any tips on how you deal with this problem? Thank you.

I think the only thing you can do is keep practising. Put it in her day to day schooling, so ride plenty of halt to walk, walk to halt transitions and just keep practising at shows etc.

I had EXACTLY the same problem, I decided after one show i'd had enough so then I made him learn to stand tied up for an hour and relax and go to sleep... once he learned to relax he was much better... also, carl hester suggests you start by taking your horse to an event doing what he/she really enjoys-in a lot of cases this would be jumping, that way the horse associates the show with fun! stick with it and she will settle

This sounds awful but try standing her up on the yard for a while...possibly whilst you're mucking out or something...she will get bored and will stand still, if you did this regulary she should get into the habit Or just keep practising

It'll come with time and experience. When my mare was 4 she couldn't stand in the line or anything. She now stands like a pro. It just takes time and practise.

I would get her doing dressage, this will get her listening a little more.
