my 8 year old thoroughbred is in a plain loose ring snaffle at ome for schooling/hacking. he is fine in tis at home, he has a soft mouth but as soon as he gets in the show ring his head goes in the air and he gets very strong and spoils himself. i have tried alot of bits to get him through this but had no look, a few people have said to put him in a double bridle?? or a pelham?? i didnt really want to do tis but if it will get him through it in the show ring what do you all think? DOUBLE BRIDLE / PELHAM?? if pelham which one do you think would be best, the softiest one not a rubber one as he never liked rubber bits.. please no harsh comments this is a genuine post, i have tried to work around it but no luck, im not just someone who wants to throw my horse in a pelham. but needs must.. thank-you for reading.

Is he an ex racer that maybe associates a group of horses as going down to the start of a race? I would try him in a double and a pelham and see what he goes best in although if he is getting strong due to excitement then neither of those will cure that!!!

We had a stallion that went pokey nosed when at shows as he wanted to look around at everything all the time. We went from a hanging cheek to a wilkie and then a loose ring waterford snaffle. He finally went fab in the waterford but I think it was also a combination of schooling at home and experience in the ring that finally got him listening. A waterford would also help when he becomes strong.

If he has a soft mouth i wouldn't stick a pelhum in try a wilkie snaffle just something with slight poll pressure all mine show in these i hate pelhums i try to avoid them at all cost but i would definitely try a wilkie

www.horsebitbank.com/search.php?page=1&search_key=waterfordIts a type of mouthpiece, you get it 1/4 to 1/2 an inch larger than the horse needs so when they try to take hold it collapses in their mouth stopping them from doing so. Alot of people think its harsh but the stallion I had it in just thought it was sweetys.

Is there any chance you are tensing your hands up when you go in the ring ? Do you have an instructor who could have a look at what your pony does in the ring . Assuming teeth etc are up to date . Maybe he will get better the more you get him out , Good Luck

i dont show him, it was his first season last year and a very experienced rider took the ride. so the tensing hands is a DEFFO NO, NO! from bot me and his show rider. ;D also up to date wit everything. just the showing side of it! thank-you very much for your comment. x
