I have ended up with a county standard SHP for my ten year-old daughter. We have always been a Pony Club/hunting family and worn nothing fancier than second-hand hacking jackets! We need to upgrade to do the pony justice and I'm just after a bit of advice please. I had always thought navy collars looked a bit flash - but is this the 'look' for SHP? If they get going a bit, we might end up doing some WHP classes as well. Is it navy collars for these as well? Don't want to end up getting a jacket that we can't use in both classes. Some of the checks in the jackets, again, seem rather over the top. Is it a case that the bolder the jacket the better - or does subtle still work? Jodhpur wise I'm a bit confused by the different colours. Should I be buying corn or canary? Many thanks for your help. I've already managed to buy a few things - such a SHP bridle - via Horse Gossip.

Best thing to do is go on a photographers site, and look at shp classes, pick out what you think looks the best , print a few pics off and compare....Then you will have a benchmark to aim towards xx Have fun , we do the 13shp classes xx

I am certainly no expert, but have googled both and both seem to use tweed and velvet collars are acceptable.
Just found this by googling too: The correct dress for Working Hunter and Show Hunter jockeys is canary or beige jodhpurs, brown jodhpur boots, brown or tan gloves and either a skull cap with cover or a velvet hat for Working Hunters, and a velvet hat for the Show Hunters. Correctly secured British Standard Skull Caps/Riding Hats Nos. EN 1384, PAS 015, or PAS accredited hats MUST be worn by riders at all times when mounted These should be in keeping with the colour of your jacket. Tweed hacking jackets should be worn in both these classes with neat tidy hair tied back with ribbon or scrunchie.
There are some gorgeous tweeds out there so don't go buying the first one you see. Get a good quality one because the cut is far superior to say a Caldene or similar (sorry Calden wearers!!) just personal preference there! Take a look on here and see if anything is for sale that could fit or look on ebay searching for "pretty ponies" or "fylde" or "Mrs Candy" or "foxley" or "showing selection" - all really nice makes and these jackets last forever and are passed on time and time again.
Try finding some equestrian photographers SBM are one - someone else might be able to add others as I just cannot think of their names at the mo! When I first started out I found these photos of hugh help to see what was good, what was not and what was available.

Mrs Candy also does some second hand. Look on her website and give her a call with measurements.

Also if you get a jacket off Mrs Candy/Showscene/Pretty Ponies they usually do a jacket exchange so when they grow out of it you can take it back and either put it towards a new one or they buy it off you.

Mrs Candy, Showing Selection and Showing Gems all make lovely jackets. I have this tweed for my chestnut shp, the top one. www.showingselectionreductions.com/tweed_jacketsand this tweed on the smaller ponies, although mine has a slightly lighter base colour. www.showinggems.co.uk/component/virtuemart/?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=58&category_id=13The tweed doesn't have to be bold, just compliment the pony and rider and be smart and fit well, not to big or to small, I hate sleeves that go right over the hands, baggy jackets and jackets that are to long and don't sit right on the back of the saddle. Mine fits like this www.sbmphotographic.co.uk/0611110972img3528I haven't got any photos of my other tweed. Just look at photo websites like equinational, RTI photography, Pleasure Prints and look at the county and championship shows like BSPS as they have goo photos of what tweeds are worn at county, RIHS and HOYS standerd. Good luck x

Just want to say a HUGE thank you to everybody who has taken the time to offer advice/suggestions. Our previous showing experience is bony pony and fancy dress at the local show so it all seemed a bit daunting. We didn't set out to buy such a special pony - she sort of found us! I'm really very moved by the way you have all taken time out to help me. Thanks again.

Try the Kimberly Tweed from Mrs Candy we had that on our SHP & looks great. Mrs Candy does do exchange for some jackets too, which can make things much cheaper!
