Honestly get an instructor in to help you. I tried every tip I was given but just couldn't get my mare to do it. First lesson with my dressage instructor and she got it straight away.

I taught my old D mare to extend on the lunge in the field - collect up on a big circle, then let go and encourage forwards movement straight forwards on a tangent, running parallel for as long as you can keep up, then throttling back onto a more collected circle again. She got it very quickly, and I then found it easy to transfer to under saddle - but they are only ready to do this when working well from behind under saddle anyway.

Your pony needs to be off her shoulder and truly working in balance and from behind before it is possible. You will need an instructor to assess you both and take you on from there.

I agree with SarahP and SO. They can't do it until they are working correctly, from behind. A good starting place is to teach them different speeds within the same pace, all in balance and collection. Some 'get it' pretty quickly, some even with this training, don't! I have had great results doing exactly as SarahP explains, getting a good strong trot, in collection, with plenty of impulsion on a circle, on the lunge and then letting them 'open up' along the long side. Its imporant not to let them run and certainly, I would get them up and off their forehand in order to free up the should to stretch forward.

Agree with all of the above. My dressage instructor always tells me that before you can get a good extension you need to really to have cracked collection, and obviously your pony will need to be working correctly for this and be quite light and off his shoulder. For extension exercises, I personally like to ride a ten metre circle in collected trot then ask for extension up the long side (pretty much what sarahp has described but under saddle rather than on the lunge). It's more of an 'opening up' than asking them to go hell for leather, which just results in a super fast trot rather than true extension.

I always did lunge better than I rode!
