Looking for pony to loan. Not becasue we can't afford one but OH says I am only able to get pony on loan not buy, men!! it has taken me two (long) years to persuade him to let us have another pony and I have worked my socks off, overtime etc to be in a financial postion to be able to have another one. If I go against him then even having a pony on loan will be quashed and could not face explaining that to a 7 year old who i have promised will have a pony to ride in 2012. I guess it is cheeky to ask people whose ponies are for sale if they will loan but i am always polite and apologetic never pushy. So why do people have to be rude back, I just don't know! Some may say i deserve it as I am just wasting thier time. I am not setting out to waste anybody's time just trying to find a safe sane pony for my very precious daughter. Absolutely 10* home offerred in return. I can also understand peoples reservations re loaning as you hear so many horror stories but feel sure if people gave us a chance they would see that we are genuine. hasten to add rudeness has not come from anyone on HG or who I have met on HG, all have been wondderfull from here and wished us luck in our search. Right rant over, now where is my flak jacket??

I agree, it is not asking too much to expect good manners.
I 'borrowed' an ex-eventer/hunter in 1997. He was the very best horse I have ever seen, touched, ridden etc. Everyone who knew him loved him. I had almost ten years with him and when his time was over, I rang his owner (I had tried to pay for him many times) to let her know what had happened.
She came over to see him and afterwards sent me a large bouquet with the sentiment of 'thanks for giving Scotch the best years of his life'. This card is still on my fridge, I look at it every day and am so grateful that this lady gave me the opportunity to befriend, ride, totally spoil and pander to this beloved horse.
I came by this horse through personal recommendation though, perhaps you should put out the message amongst your equine friends? People would be more approachable if you were contacted via people who know you.
Best of luck, I am sure there is a pony out there for you.

Agreed auntiebarb. I have just lent out a favourite very special D in similar circumstances, who would never have been openly advertised. I was asked if I knew of one for loan one answering her desciption, but not asking for her specifically and with no thought of her, by someone I know and trust, and thought it would be the best thing for the mare, me and the loanees so off she went.
Nursey, I would lend you an A if I had a suitable one kicking round doing nothing, but as a breeder I don't have anything with the experience you need. Well handled and kind yes, broken even, but experienced under saddle no. I can see your OH's point of view though, in this climate it does always give the option of returning the pony if things get difficult as opposed to have to try to sell. I have some here I'd never sell, often old favourites whose futures I want to secure, but may loan, others I would like to hold on to as potential future broodmares and would very happily loan out for a ridden career in the mean time, and others who have had a for sale notice on since birth and that I'd rather sell, not through any fault of their own but because I would have no future use for them myself although they could give great pleasure in another home, eg geldings.

there is an old saying 'if you don't ask, you don't get' and yes, although people may not have advertised their ponies for loan but for sale, it is always worth asking. I agree that people don't have to be rude, a simple 'thanks but no thanks' should sufice. Good luck,I am sure the right ponhy is just out there waiting to be found

I think you must try appreciate that maybe people are having lots of enquiries asking for loan and they are taking the view that if they wanted to loan they would say so. They might also think that people want to loan so they can have a pony and then send it back when they are finished with it. Some people might find that very irritating and slightly more than cheeky.

I wouldn't, it entirely makes sense, especially for a child's pony as children grow out of ponies! Would be best to discuss that in the first place though if it's what you have in mind. Not if you just want it for school holidays though!
I've always done a year's loan agreement to start with, to be reviewed after that. Although will take them back at any time if required.

You are in danger of appearing to waste people's time if you don't want to buy and you contact them when they are looking to sell. Therefore be prepared to not get the best reception from the majority and don't take it to heart.

I kind of agree with this, whilst there are plenty of ponies forsale surely if somebody was willing to loan they would put so on their ad? It's not an excuse for being rude tho, manners cost nothing!Personally if an ad didn't say they would loan then I perhaps wouldn't ask

There's nothing to stop sellers putting 'sorry, no loans' on the bottom of a for sale ad though.

I dont wish to be rude but surely if someone wanted to loan a pony they would advertise it for loan and not for sale Therefore that means not ringing and asking to loan, i would be fed up if you called me in this sitauation. Decent lead rein ponies that are safe and suitable for showing are so hard to find and often not even needed to be advertised as are passed on from word of mouth and for several thousand pounds, i assume you are looking for a schoolmaster type as seen some of your older posts stating ponies you have had have not been suitable. Therefore maybe you need to look for an older pony that maybe not county standard anymore and look to just do little shows until you are in a position to buy a pony that may suit you

It doesnt matter what the add says you dont know unless you ask. There is absolutely no excuse for being rude a simple 'no sorry want to sell not loan', would suffice. This particular person contacted me and if I could get the mare to her she would have it. I have however had numerous people on here insisting on extra photos etc and so we have gone out and taken some . Only to be completely ignored! If I request extra pics and the animal is not what Im looking for then again I contact with a simple thankyou for your troubles but its not the right animal for me. Manners cost nothing. Im with you Nursey (right got my flack jacket on now )

yes i agree with you nursey some ponies are for sale ages so whats point in having a pony stood in a field when a little girl/boy could be out showing and riding it. That way pony could get noticed could sell quicker if you now what i mean

i have know plenty of sellers start out with advertising for sale, and then someone has asked about loaning and they turned out to be the right people for the right pony and loans were agreed, i wouldnt mind anyone asking me, and theres def no harm in good manners and your def not wasting peoples time so keep trying i say! and good luck

My mum buys them and once they have been in the field a couple of weeks breaks the news to my step-dad Also remember seeing a thread on here of a lady always buying the same colour / type of pony so her husband hadn't a clue how many they had!

I think people advertising safe bombproof ponies probably get a large number of enquiries from teenagers asking to loan/wanting a brilliant pony for nothing and probably just take it out on everyone after a bit.
I'm looking for something nice and quiet to loan at the moment, and i only tend to message if they state for loan/loan considered.

Although if the advert clearly states no loans then i think it *is* rude to ignore that and go ahead and ask anyway.

Totally agree with S&O if the advert says for sale then that's what it means. The pony/horse is for sale. I had so many people wasting my time by asking questions sending photos and one parent who turned up with child in tow, tried said pony, wanted pony and asked for loan! 3 hours of my day wasted and a lot of upset for the child due to not being able to have the pony!. So I wont apologies for any rudeness in my answering the telephone in future to someone who rings and asks for a loan in response to my FOR SALE add or not answering email that do the same! If someone wishes to take the risk then feel free to do so but if a person does not like the response I am sorry to say I will not loose any sleep over it p.s I am not usually rude or ignorant just peed off with it!

Some people do wish to sell but when you ask they are prepared to loan it. Until we were struggling to sell our pony, we hadnt cosider loaning. Even if people dont want to loan just asking only takes 5mins, its hardly wasting time, is it??

If you are struggling to find one have you tried your local PC. The DC might know of one in the club as they tend not to get sold but passed from one jockey to another. Also the PC web site has loads of ponies for loan on there so might be worth a try.
