Hi all, I have a two yr old gelding that I am planning to take to some in hand classes this year, have been trying to teach him to trot in hand but not having much luck... Any tips or advice please?!!
Our first show is the 29th April so I haven't long now to get him going.....!
Thanks in advance! Shona

Do u mean u can't get him into trot? If so, make sure u are walking by his shoulder or even slightly behind to "drive" him forward, never drag! Also try taking him out for walks and try there, they are allot more willing to go forward then than they are in the school. If he is still a bit sticky, get someone to walk a horse/pony out in front of you, get them to trot on and yours should follow. Dont forget to ask for "trot" so he learns the command, and praise when he does! Also if u make sure ur leadrope is long enough to give him a tap behind you that can also help x

Hi jep, yeh he just won't go into trot, and I dont want to drag him into it, hence why I havnt really done much trot work yet! He also has a habit of walking behind me, or beside me but with his nose at my elbow! Tomorrow night is going to be the night though, I'm going to mean business and get him going, gently! Thought about following another horse, so will try that too! Thanks for the tips!

You could try having someone behind you to "encourage" him forward

Probably will get shot down but i use a long schooling whip, mine get a tap everytime i say trot and i move back to their shoulder. That way when i move back to the shoulder in the ring and say trot under my breath, they know to move forward. it only takes 1 or 2 taps and they get it pretty quick. remember lots of praise when they get it right.

I'd agree, use a certain word or noise along with it. Practice your in hand show lots, mine now know when they walk away and are turned they are to trot - but only after 1 stride of walk Practice really does make perfect

We have that problem with our nearly 2 year old fell.He has done 2 shows now with OH and he was better on his 2nd.Dont panick the steward and judge shood him on to trot.More work is being done in menage now so he understands with voice command and a quick tap
