hi our GSD dog (neutered) has a bad ear ie it is very itchy and he scratches at it constantly , we have had him at the vet so many times countless antibiotics and ear drops( the first vet) they then told me i was being neurotic and there really was nothing there . so we took him to a different vet where , had him put under a general so they could see his ear properly . they couldnt find anything wrong , apart from they think he may have had mange in the past ( we got him about 12 months ago ) he is now 2 . So we have had a skin scrape done was expecting them to find something but nothing . Which would have better if they had have found something because then obv they would have something to treat , does anyone else have a dog or gsd with this problem / it seems to be worse in the summer ... but that could be me .... i have ordered a hypoallengic food for him froms burns which at 45 quid a bag is not cheap .. just feel so bad for him but im stuck as to what to do next we have spent a small fortune on him with no luck so far !
thanks laura

Hmm my husky had a ear infection recently which has cleared up with antibiotic ear drops and cleaning solution, the vet did say that she has a narrow ear canal and very hariy ears so could be prone to ear infections, I'm guessing GSD's may have the same problem as they have a similar ear set-up?
As the vet's have found nothing wrong, did a bit of goolgling and came up with this:
"Even though your veterinarian found the ears to be normal, there could still be some underlying ear problem that may not be readily detected by physical examination alone. For example, a middle ear infection, also known as otitis media, can cause shaking of the head and scratching at the ears. Otitis media can only be diagnosed via x-rays and/or otoscopy, CT scans, or an MRI.
Similarly, if your dog has an underlying allergy to food or environmental factors, this can also lead to similar symptoms without necessarily observing any obvious physical signs. Ask your veterinarian about a referral to a specialist in dermatology and allergy problems in order to try to determine the cause of your dog's symptoms."
Maybe worth going back to your vet?

My GSD who we got at 8yrs now 15 1/2yrs, is always at his ears, when I clean them[daily] the wax is just so thick. We have had him to the vet in the past but nothing really stops the constant scratching, he sometimes puts his back foot right up inside his mouth to do it from the inside, I think alot of it is habit now. I have had 3 GSD in the past and none of then did it

My gsd also had ear itches, we eventually discovered he has grass allergy and as he was always sniffing in the long grass was getting very itchy ears. We now keep him out of the grass, and give him cheap anti histamine tablets and has helped him loads, (he was also sratching in his "arm pits". Not sure if any help at all? Check with your vets see what they think, our gsd was easy to diagnose as only happened when the grass was growing! Good luck! x

Our 12 year old girl used to always suffer with ear infections. Always at the vets and given canarual drops. We were told she was probably allergic to the meat & animal derevitives in dog food so we swopped to james well beloved, although the vets wanted us on hills science plan I said no way too expensive. She went off it so I put her on chappie and harringtons complete (can get it in Asda) instead of a mixer and fingers crossed she's been fine for over 18 months now. I do clean them regular but mostly there clean now. Used to be horrid brown wax stuff.

thankyou for the replys , he has had skin scrapes and has been tested for ear mites so we can rule that out but he is on burns hypoallengic food which at 40 quid a bag is not cheap but we will see how we get on .... i may try him on chappie though . and i will give the anti his a go as well after his 3 month trial with the dog food is over ... does anyone feed raw food ? as it has been recommended to me .
i am going to take him back to the vets if i dont see an improvement in a couple of weeks cant bear to see him in pain , poor lad xx
