hey, i've got a seven month kitten who had an accident a couple of weeks ago (with a car we think) and unfortunately, all his back end was damaged (maily his tail) he had to have his tail removed. he's recovered alright now but seems to not know when he's going to the toilet ect and he can still use his back legs but they're not strong if you know what i mean! was just wondering has this ever happened to anyone elses cat that you know of and they've had the same issues? and if so, do you recon he will ever fully recover? thanks, laura

We had a cat years ago who was attacked by 2 dogs she was in a bad way for a while and spent 2 weeks in intensive care but she pulled through, however she lost most of her tail and the use of one leg ( although not amputated on vets advise) I worried for a while about whether we should have PTS or not but on reflection I'm so glad we didn't she came back to being a stable cat like a duck to water still caught mice and rats ( that were almost as big as her!) she never ever seemed to be bothered at all. She died a few years ago at a ripe old age. Your kitten sounds as though there may be nerve damage which means she is incontinent ? I would speak to your vet again to see if this is normal and they expect improvement or not, then take it from there

yeah he got nerve damage and yep, he is incontinent, was reading on the internet though that it can go after a month or so, was just wondering if that is necessarily true, he's been for check ups ect and they've said he's fine, just can't help but worry whether or not he will properly recover

Well all you can do is watch and wait to see if any feeling comes back and how he deals with things? It's strange some just get on with it and others don't but as he is only young he stands a better chance I would have thought? Fingers crossed

Unfortunately you're vet should be advising you a bit better. Sometimes the nerve damage can never recover :-(
I used to work in a vets and saw a similar thing happen to two cats.
Have you been back to your vets and explained that the kitten is having toilet trouble? As there are a couple of treatments you could try.
Hopefully with kitten being young the problem may resolve.
And never get vet advice off the internet! Vets get quite annoyed at it! Lol! Fingers crossed x

One of our cats had a similar thing happen, some of her vertebrae had 'pulled apart' and she lost function of her tail and bladder, she couldnt actually go to the toilet herself and had to go to the vets everyday to be 'expressed'. The vets said that if the sensation in the nerves were going to come back they usually do so within 10 days so we gave her a chance. Unfortunately poor smudge eventually became too weak and her organs began to shut down so we made the decision to have her pts. It sounds as though your kitty has more nerve feeling as he can actually go to the toilet which sounds promising! Although would agree with whoever said your vets should have given you more info on this! Everything crossed for you that the nerve sensation starts to come back soon!

Our kitty had exact same and had his tail removed. he can poo and wee ok but has laxitive once a week to keep things moving normally. we are used to our tailless kitty now and he doe's all the normal kitty things , walks across top of fence, leaps up the curtains etc etc don't think being tailless has given him any problems.
will post a picture , i think he looks like a little rottwieller!!
