I have owned my horse for narly 3 years and he was always known as the confidence giver. Last yr nothing phased me at all, but we had a scare with a brass band and it's gone down hill ever since. He would be 110% in traffic and now he spooks at wagons, buses, motorbikes and cars towing which is having a detremental affect on my confidence espcially in company as he sets the other horses off. I know it's a vicious circle because now when I see any of these things approaching it is difficult not to tense

Dont know what to suggest but we have had a similar problem with my daughter and her shetland who was previously bomb proof . All was going fab last year they were really getting it together and i thought great we have cracked it . Then my daughter had a virus/flu type illness causing her to faint a couple of times . A few weeks later we took the pony to a show and she kept playing up while waiting for the class although she behaved once in the ring . Everything seemed to go downhill from there and had to stop my daughter from riding the pony as she would just tense right up as soon as she got on . Eventually i realised after daughter got on her other trusty pony that she was scared of fainting while she was riding . My daughter has built up her confidence and now rides the other pony and they get on well . Wish i had stopped her riding the shetland quicker though as i realised that she got nervous because jockey nervous and then played up . We have recently started doing a bit with the shetland but taking it really slow [plus gave the pony winter off ] as the pony needs to build her trust in my daughter again . It is a difficult situation to be in you have my sympathy all i can suggest is to take things back a gear and only do things you are happy doing for now . Perhapps dont hack out for a little while or find someone to hack with who has a horse who wont worry if yours is a bit on edge . Do you have a school you can ride in rather than hack . S&O suggestion is also a good one . Good Luck

can you get a confident rider to get out hacking on the horse ? i think its a combination of both of you being tense, as your wondering why hes lost his confidence hes prob wondering why you've lost yours. hth

It sounds like you have both lost confidence and at the moment you wont be helping one another out as he can feel you are tense so he will wondering what is up and getting tense himself. How his he in the school?
Has for the hacking, if you want to ride him i would suggest you hack out in company of a quiet confidence giving horse and rider to help you both out and if you can to hack alone even get someone to walk on foot with you to give you both the much need confidence boost - I used to have partner walking out with me on mine - you will find you relax when you have someone you trust with you which will then in return relax your horse.
I do hope you can work through this together, we all have knocks of confidence and its finding way to restore it together....Do you have lessons? Maybe an instructor can help you both out?
