Ive been shopping for a show hat today with no luck at all because my head is apprently too 'round'! All the hats i tried were too tight at the sides and massive at the front so nothing would fit! Does anyone else have this problem? And if so, what hat did you get to fit? As i dont want to buy something that doesnt fit propperly. Thanks

my son has the same problem theres always loads of space at front and back of his hat when it fits at the sides... harry hall fit him perfect lucky hes a boy and can get away with a navy blue show jumping style hat in the ring... cos charles owen show hats dont go near him :-(

i have exactly this problem, so many times i have tried on hats and felt they were crushing my head in sideways but fell over my eyes if i leant forward! Just Togs velvet hats seem to be the right sort of shape tho they are not as nice as the other makes.for riding at home i have resorted to a Polly adjustable hat which is really comfortable and very light.

thanks, dont think i can afford a made to measure one though! i have a harry hall hat at the minute for everyday riding and fits perfect, so going to see if they have a show hat avaliable. I tried the just toggs one yesterday, it was the same problem! think ill have to go with the show jumper type as dont want to be wearing something that doesnt fit. trust my pony loads but dont want to risk it in a show ring when there are other horses it there, one rather wear the wrong sort and have my head protected then wear the 'correct' hat. will just have to keep trying them on!!

If you place the front of the hat against something solid (above the brim)and hard and push hard on the back some hats will go more to the shape wanted for your head. I have always had to do this with mine but I suppose you should really buy the hat first !!!

I really wouldn't try to reshape a hat - you may damage it, and if you come off it won't give you the correct level of protection and will also invalidate any warranty that comes with it. There is a thread somewhere within the questions and tips section, under "what show equipment..." from a lady with a similar issue and she did find one to fit. Go to a large specialist equestrian store and try on as many different styles as possible. A skull cap with a velvet cover, for example, might suit?

I have just had the same problem, my head is too round! I bought a Charles Owen Fiona hat at the weekend which the fitter assured me fit my head perfectly. Lovely show hat, and much praised in other threads on this website. It cost about £120.

Have you stuck to Charles Owen hats or have you looked at others - the Gatehouse show hat has quite a good name.

Champion Hats, I find that there are 2 types of head round head and the other sort. Champion fit round heads very well. Did try a charles Owen but it gave me mirgains for a week and that was with a person who knew what thay were doing.

I was going to suggest Champion hats too.... if it would help I can take a photograph of it next to a Charles Owen and/or just Togs hat of a similar size?

I make deep crown show caps for a living, and I would like to say that all children have round heads, but as we mature we get oval heads, however there is a small amount of people who still have round heads when they have matured, I feel you fit into this catagory. Any british standards hats I can adjust, make bigger or smaller, not a big job, so if you find something close come back to me and I will see if I can help you. I also recover them and put harnesses on them, once you find one that fits, people like to hang onto their favourites.

I have a round head and also found a Champion to be the best fit.

Gadabout - can you put a flesh coloured strap on a velvet helmet that currently has a navy strap? My son's hat would look smarter with the flesh strap, but I couldn't afford it at the time and just bought a bog standard one!
