Ive had my mare for eight weeks now, she is usually very placid and calm, however over the last few days she has started to be very jumpy and even spooked at the noise an apple made when she bit into it! I don't think she is in season but this is my first horse and wondered if anyone knows what could be setting her off?

She may just be feeling a bit fitter, my stallion was being rather silly on a hack a couple of days ago but I have been riding him more and hes probably feeling a little fresh, spring is in the air. Is it worrying you?

Hi, thanks for the replies. It does worry me a little. I'm a novice and worry that she will tank off with me but tbh she hasn't done anything like that up to now!

You could try feeding Magneium Oxide. A lady on here sells it, Rosella I think, or you could try ebay.
Spring grass tends to be defficient in Magnesium, and causes the silliness associated with it. It's the main product in most commercial calmers too.

Maybe get your instructer to ride out with you and talk you through how to react. I would get this problem sorted now as if you feel tense in situations it will only make her worse.

Thank you! I do try to keep relaxed and talk very calmly to her when it happens. I never shout or get cross with her.

My Aunt gives her spooky riding pony pink powder which apparently settles their digestive system and just them in general - she is a completely chilled pony now! May be worth a try if it continues, its not expensive and works

Time of the year for sure! I walk a chestnut balloon and a bay balloon to the field everyday at the moment!!!
Again I find the spring grass sends mine a bit cuckcoo! My mare usually settles down after a few seasons.
Good luck, I hope you get sorted :-)

I would agree with everyone else and say it's probably the time of year. My mare was off her head for a couple of weeks recently and I think it was a combination of the spring grass and her coming into season. If it continues to worry you though, do let you instructor know.
