i have recently brought a new pony who doesn't accept the bit (in my opinion!) he is a 4 year old 13hh traditional. i have try quite a few different bits in him and he has had his teeth and back check. if i ride him with no contact the he goings round quite happily even coming into an outline at time! if i take a contact he starts running on the bit and going againest it! im not bothered about an outline at the stage i just want him to happy with a contact!! to make it worse he does put his tongue over the bit at time!! should i re-mouth him, what can i do to help him??

at only 4yrs i wouldnt expect him to be accepting the bit too much , at his age its obviously all very new to him , if he will come down without a contact i would say just be happy with that for now , have a play about with some very mild bits and youll probably find he will take a contact when he feels happy with his mouth , have you tried a happy mouth bit ??

put some honey or toothpaste on it and encourange him to mouth it and soften. Also long rein to get his used to contact

Try a lozenge, it maybe the nut cracker action of a normal snaffle that he is lifting his head away from and evading the contact

I would pop a mouthing bit in him (with keys) and do some long reining

Teeth, back and general all over physical check, saddle fitter and a nice little lozenge snaffle bit with instructor able to get on and feel what is happening.

Dont expect to much from this baby i have one which im producing who has been badly broken which is doing the same as your i have now re-mouthed him and started lunging him in side reins and long-reining him in a breaking bit (key bit) so he can mouth on it try him with that a cob is so much harder to ride though as you have to carry them other wise they just dont work correctly.
