Recently, I have been really confused on where my hands should be when riding a SHP. I used to have the together and quite high but only have little control that way, I am trying to lower my hands a little now but not sure what hand position is best? ?? Pictures may help..thanks!

I'm not really a showing person, I've dabbled! Never done SHP. But classically and to be most effective biomechanically as a rider there should be a straightish line, elbow, wrist, hand, rein, horse's mouth. This means that the rein is just an extension of your own arm and thus is much more giving. Width wise, keep your wrists straight, like you're holding a mug of tea in each hand. I'll see if I have any rare pitures of me actually achieveing this, to show you what I mean! It's not the best by any means, it was only the second time my little lad had been ridden! That's my excuse anyway so it's a rather defensive seat and could be improved. Ideally, I ought to have closed the back of my armpits. This opens, the shoulders, enlists the core and gets rid of that slouch I've got going on too! But it does demostrate the straight line through the arm and rein quite clearly.

Honestly, I like how you hold your hands! I've seen pictures, and unlike many 'show jockeys' you don't have your hands like your riding a motorbike. Only thing I would pick out is, like you said, they are slightly too close together (I had this problem!). You want to achieve what GinaGeo has mentioned, the straight line. Here is a pic of me (obviously I'm not a perfect example by any means! But it gives you an idea) I've been trying to get my hands 'wide and low' to encourage him to stretch down more and work through his back rather than keep tensing back on me when I make him work! So my hands are usually a few inches higher than shown, but I have them lower for him- confusing I know BUT I have the awful, awful habit of riding with motorbike hands whilst using 2 reins [pic attached, but not very clear!] And here (using a pelham again) they are half and half! Sorry, just an excuse to share pictures really!! I also find it hard to have 'perfect hands' whilst holding a stick.. So yes, what I'm trying to say is that no one is perfect haha! I'd say you should just widen them slightly as they are very nice as they are. But then again, it is whatever the pony goes best with!

iluvbuckaroo- the chestnut in your third picture down looks like a laithehill section b that a friend used to own - please accept my apologies.

I wish I could ride with neat hands. I ride with "motorbike hands" and thus stick my elbows out. Luckily, I don't do ridden showing but it's a very bad habit of mine, I also ride with loose reins - because I use my seat more than my hands! Very nice pictures buckaroo Well done abcd!!!
