Thinking of getting myself a decent 3.5 horsebox, and to help with costs was hoping to hire it out when we aren't using it and/or maybe transporting ponies for people, has anybody done this? What costs are involved with both options? Need to weigh everything up before I go ahead with anything, won't be doing it if costs outweigh benefits so would like to know as much as possible beforehand

If you are to transport other horses for profit you will need a CET an operators licence, A taco fitted to the horsebox, care and custody insurance, public liability insurance and insurance on the horse box, not cheap sorry. x

Hi if you want to pm me I send me your email address I will be able to answer some of your questions for you. I have just placed my small business a self drive horsebox up for sale and I could tell you costings etc.
I have put on an earlier thread advertising it here on horsegossip or feel free to give me a call. Thanks

You shouldn't need an operators licence or tachograph if you stay below 3.5t but very few of these lorries are legal weight wise. you will also need to get proper insurance, local authority licence to move animals and an animal transporter's CPC. Most are only formalities but all cost money. I'm hoping to do a similar thing but with a bigger lorry so lots more paperwork.
