Just wondering what everyone uses for their pre show baths on their horses? Are equine shampoos better than human (so worth the extra money?)I am looking for something to give a nice shine to a black fell

I use specific horse shampoo, because in my mind that is what they are designed for and human shampoo is designed for humans, I use Wahl shampoo it gives my mare a lovely shine on her coat

I quite often use Johnsons baby shampoo on ponies and dogs as I know it is kind on thier eyes if some accidentally goes in when washing manes and forelocks or doing the dogs heads

Whal is very good and you can buy a gallon on ebay for about £20, or you could last year, and it waters down really well.

For really dirty grey/white tails I use head and shoulders/supermarket own brand of same, strips out wee stains. Cheap supermarket conditioner after, tea tree or something like it. For shows I tend to use Absorbine shampoo, bring up colour really well. Always been a bit nervous of human shampoos on their bodies.

I use Schwartzkopf silver shampoo on greys (dont have any now though) and white socks, and just a regular whatever, for the type of coat/skin condition as I would on myself, including selsen for the scurf buckets TBH, have never subscribed to the 'its designed for them so it must be better' school of thought, feel a lot of the 'products' being sold these days are a smoke and mirrors routine for the highly gullible with a deep pocket, I've been bathing horses for 40 years and never had a problem with human shampoo, dont like using dish-washing stuff though as it well and truly strips the hair of any oil what-soever. I've just bought a load of expensive salon products at a knock-down price to set mine up for the summer, salon who sold it me said they get lots of dog showers buying their stuff as well, as they feel they get ripped off by the 'specifically designed for canine skins' malarky in their game too, and dont buy into the hype.

I use Tresemee Deep Cleansing shampoo if they are really manky, but other than that I pick up whatever I feel like on the day - I have a caravan at the yard that is like a beauty salon with a wide range of shampoos as I seem to pick one up every time I see something different, lol! Peasridge has a good range of shampoos and you can buy highly concentrated 5l bottles for about £25 and they can easily last a whole season for one pony.

I would just like to add something to this post from personal experience with kids. For the past five years I have used Johnsons Baby on my daughter's hair due to the "kind to eyes" issue. However, I was chatting to a school mum the other day who happens to be a hairdresser and I was complaining that my daughter has the worst, flyaway, uncontrollable and all the time "bed head" hair ever. I was jealous of the other girls in her class with their lovely silky smooth locks! She told me to ditch the johnsons because it makes the hair shafts "blow" - you know, when you watch those hair adverts and they show a close-up of the hair shaft and it is made up of sort of scales - these scales are made to stick out rather than lie flat. I immediately ditched the johnsons and used my own shampoo and conditioner and hey presto 1 million x better! Amazing! So, if you are looking for the sleek and sexy look (assuming horse hair, mane and tail is made the same as human hair) don't use johnsons!

I'm another for tesco's value shampoo, ponies never looked any different being washed in that than they did being washed in an expensive equine one!

Champion tails silver hilights. I go through it by the bucketload but swear by it for greys & coloureds. Difficult to get hold of but I have a good supplier!!!! Lol. Wouldn't dream of washing up liquid for reasons stated above, strips all grease & oils out of coat.

Will try that on my mare's yellow tail as nothing else will get it white

Another fan of Tresemme deep cleansing shampoo, really works plus use fairy liquid (original) for greys and socks. Have always used human shampoo for many years on our ponies.

I norally use Johnsons baby as its mild (still use it for legs and face) and have always used whatever is cheapest and quite often whatever is cheapest of the human variety, however, I have been converted to Supreme High Shine shampoo, it does what it says on the tin - love it - but save it for body only, head/legs get Johnsons (bought in bulk when its £1 a bottle) and tail usually gets washing up liquid as that seems to work best!

i do 2 rinses, first one I use fairy liquid to strip the grease and grub off their coats and the second rinse I use Wahl diamond white. The ponies are always gleaming, I also use lots of baby oil on show day
