i've been riding twelve months and i was just wondering whatadvice you would give me in order to help use my seat more (for making my pony stop) ect and what do you do to stop your pony without really having to use your hands? also, when i've been riding my pony, i've been doing gentle squeases with my outside hand to try and get my pony on a contact more and she just completely avoids it and puts her head up in the air, what am i doing wrong? is that just because i'm not using my legs properly? and if so, how should i be using them? i've been doing some stirrupless work so hopefully that should be helping my seat to develop but any other advice will be greatly appreciated, thankyou!

Has your pony been 'properly' schooled beforehand so she knows what you're asking or is it a starting from scratch situation?

In regards to stopping without using your hands, you need to "think" it When I want my section C to do a trot to halt transition I use my seat and my stomach to stop him. Think of it as stopping the energy flowing forwards, I tense my stomach a little as well to stop the flow!

As you have only been riding for a relatively short period of time I would suggest you get an instructor and have some lessons, they will be able to advise what you are doing wrong and what you are doing right

^ Agree with desktop. The advice we give may well be totally irrelevant without seeing you ride, and may be detrimental!

I had a brilliant instuctor as a child and several very naughty ponies. What she taught me has stayed with me and helped loads of others. Please excuse its simplicity and 'childish' way but it will give you a grounding.
Balance over your stirups like you are about to dive backwards off a diving board. Once you are balanced your pony will be able to become balanced underneath you.
When you are happily going along imagine you are bouncing high on a trampoline and want all of your muscles relaxed to allow the energy through. When you want to slow down or stop do with your muscles exactly what you would do if you wanted to stop bouncing immediately on the trampoline.
It will make more sense to your muscles if you 'do it' rather than sit in the chair and think about doing it.
It is very simplistic but should give you a good starting 'feel' to start to refine.
