Does anyone know how long you should soak hay for laminitic ponies to get rid of all the goodness? Some say half an hour some say 24hrs!!!!

I was always told 12 hours+ to dissolve as many of the nutrients as possible. 30 - 60 mins if you are only soaking to stop dust for non laminitics.

Well this is a new one on me I didn't know you could soak the goodness out of hay, our vet told us to just buy a lower grade of hay soak it for dust and feed a sugar free chaff with a multy-vitamin, still you never stop learning thanks for the tip.

if you soak hay / haylage for 30 - 60 mins it removes 50% of the sugar content ( bad for laminitics) but retains all the nutrients ...soaked for longer , the nutrients start to be removed too which isnt good ..unless you want a starved pony !

maybe I'm thick, but i have always thought that if you soak hay the water which you soak it in just becomes almost fermented, and therefore all you are doing is allowing the hay to sit in sugary fermented liquid. we have always soaked the hay in either hot or cold water thoroughly, for a very short amount of time, and then hung the nets up to drain so the hay doesn't retain any of the liquid. any thoughts?

Pony hasnt had laminitis for 2yrs now (touch wood). I've always soaked it for 30mins to any hour to remove suagar as i was told better for laminitics. I always let it hang dripping and then feed. But as i put in question so many say different times!! So I'm doing right then?

There are so many different views on laminitics With the last one we had I soaked his hay overnight to make it just fibre BUT I supplemented hifi lite and fed topspec antilam and loads of garlic. Whilst in pain he had frog supports on, and when he improved put magnets on his fetlocks!! Sounds daft to take the feed away totally, but on the other hand the nutritional value of hay can differ considerably so by taking any nutritional value out and feeding hifi lite I had the control of the nutrients, but he still had the long and short chops for his guts to work correctly. Worked for me, or should I say him! Do what works for your pony

Hi I rang the top speck help line at the beginning of the year when we had a lamanitic pony. I was told to feed him 2-3 sections of hay soaked for 12 hours and also feed him 1 scoop of hi-fi lite and a meassure of anti-lam. He was obviously in a starvation paddock. It worked really well, and he lost loads of weight really easily as well as feeling full!

we soak our hay for anything very podgy for an hour we find it takes them longer to eat it .
if we feed old hay we dont usually soak it .
we also feed top spec antilam to all our mature m&ms
starving fat ponies doesnt help them to slim lots of low grade fibre keeps the metabolic rate up and helps them to loose weight faster .
