Ours always get let out last so we get drowned waiting till 3:45 for them to be let out. Its getting ridiculous. At 3.30 she is still flipping in full flow, teaching!

Our fields are under water, no riding for the foreseeable future Ponies (normally happily out 24/7) want to stay indoors, so am leaving stables / gates open so they can go out, but feeding loads of hay in the stables so they can stay in. No grass in the field anyway, just mud, puddles and ponds. We've started acquiring a collection of ducks...

We were entered for NPS Area 4 today. Decided not to go when I saw todays forecast and took my kids for a lesson yesterday instead. No way Im risking taking my lorry, ponies and children on a 2 hour journey up a very exposed part of the A1 in gale force winds Im afraid. Havent been outside yesterday but from the howling I can hear from the wind, Im glad I made the decision I did!!

My stable flooded last night - unfortunately as it doesn't have a proper floor (is a movable one to save having to get planning), my pony was standing in a good 4 inches of wet mud this morning - not impressed!!

Mine haven't been out at all today, 2 went out for a while yesterday but it was so wet, windy and cold they were both stood by their gates waiting to come in so they came in and stayed in. So glad my stables are all proper brick built in a barn and split doors at both ends to keep the wind out. Ponies are all in with nice big beds, plenty of hay and all snuggled up in big, warm rugs.

Apparently we have had 165% average April rainfall this month - and that was BEFORE today, which must have added considerably to that. Thank goodness the forecast is looking better for the next few days, in the north at least. I believe there's still a lot of rain forecast in the south and east, but you guys need it more than us It's not just our fields that are flooded, our yard (hardcore) is slowly sinking under the mud. Thank goodness the stables are on a concrete step and still perfectly dry. We've left stable doors and field gates open again, but there's no way the ponies wanted to leave their nice dry stables today!

Down here in Somerset, it hasn't stopped for 24 hours! Heavy rain and strong winds constantly! My pony didn't go out at all today. Let's hope tomorrow is better

Lovely day today, very warm and with a good breeze. I was amazed this evening at how much the fields had dried out since yesterday. I just hope we get more sunshine than showers over the next week, so that we can start riding again, after an enforced 2 week break due to waterlogged fields. Meanwhile the ponies have been reminded that they live out 24/7 and the stables have been shut off! The ponies have hay in the field and the grass is finally starting to grow, with the combination of water, sunshine and mild nights. Hurrah!

My stable flooded last night - unfortunately as it doesn't have a proper floor (is a movable one to save having to get planning), my pony was standing in a good 4 inches of wet mud this morning - not impressed!! Same happened to mine :-( I've had wooden boards down through winter then rubber mats on top then deep litter, this stopped the mud and water seeping up. Like a fool in the mini heat wave in march I cleared the lot out and left just the mats down. Well obviously in this torrential rain they flooded and we found several construction problems with the rooves. My poor OH was out in all weather doing repairs and patching up, I've now put flags, wooden boards and mats down and hoping it will help. I calculated that I wasted approx 10 quid per day in wasted bedding over around 7 days, before that I was spending around 15 per week topping up.established beds. My fields are not as bad as many in the area as I've been keeping them in on most.days but they are too wet for riding on. Weather has been lovely here today and there is now a stiff breeze blowing so hopefully the fields will start to dry. Metoffice forecast says the weather isn't set to settle down until mid may though :-( as long as we don't get anything like this past Sunday again then we will cope, we ventured out to nps area 5 and conditions were horrendous! Our fell was such an angel! She can be tempramental at the best of times, but she really put a brave face on bless her but we had to cut it short by lunch time and go home as pony and rider were shaking with cold.

Our winter fields are butted so in this weather the ponies are still out and stand on the raised bits! They look like they are on little islands bless!

My plan for next year is to put a few couple of inches of sand down with rubber mats on top to make a floor

One thing I was thinking of trying was some damp proof membrane sheets, its really cheap in b+q, I was thinking to put that down slightly larger than the stable floor and. extend it a few inches up the walls and nail in place then put down your sand/flags/ mats etc Not sure if it would work but for the price of it, it might be worth a try.

We must be really lucky then as our fields have always been well drained throughout winter and this latest wet period. Although we did have one little pond in the lowest lying part of one paddock on Sunday afternoon it was gone by this morning. Even during winter we have been able to ride in our fields - so much so that there are weeds growing in our arena from lack of use. Biggest problem for me will be the excess of grass in a few weeks. It will probably cost me a fortune in fuel to get it mowed with the price of diesel today.
