I'm looking for a new but second hand saddle, just don't want to get the size wrong again. What saddles do yours have and around what width for the chunky ones like mine? I have a saddle company saddle bought brand new custom made, really nice comfy saddle, sits nice but seems very tight on shoulder now she has filled out, it measures 10" D-D ring, maybe I should just get it widened

why not just get a fitter out to see whether it would be okay being widened or whether you need a new shape one?

C's are hard! They tend to have flatter, 'table top' backs! With ours we found the Oakfield Cherub fitted her perfect. But I agree if your having trouble maybe have a fitter come out if you can. She's a 9inch because she's not the chunkiest type - I'd get one fitted, it's really hard to find one just right.

I was looking at some ideal saddles they look very nice They are really awkward fitting, some feel like your perched on top, not a nice feeling. Mine is constantly swishing her tail in hers, puts her ears back pulls a face as soon as it goes near her, so not fitting right. Will get a fitter out, thanks ladies.

With all natives you need to be careful of design of saddle. Most will require something cut back from the shoulder (a WHP or VSD) and the more substantial padded types of saddle will give you the 'perch' effect. I find the close contact saddles are best and you might even consider a mono flap for your C. Finding this type of saddle in the wide fitting secondhand is a nightmare though.

We have a Kent and Masters pony saddle on ours with an extra wide gullet in it (they are adjustable) I love it! Pony has never gone so well since we bought her it. Really comfy for the rider too. We got a 16" due to her having a shortish back but its still roomy enough for the rider as it has a flat seat. They are not badly priced either for a new leather saddle, Think ours was about £525 new. I'd definitely try one if you can i'm so pleased we did. Hope this helps. PS Here's a link that tells you more about them. www.kentandmasters.co.uk/pony.html

What are fylde saddles like for riding in all the time? Never sat one as I always go for a GP!

People either love or hate Fyldes, I adore my fylde emma which i have on my section B, found the Hayden sat very well on C's although they're not everyones cup of tea as they are completely flat so you really have to balance yourself in them.

You have to find a balance between nicely close contact, and enough support to protect the pony from the tree (ie deep enough panels) and especially a deep enough rear panel to keep the saddle in balance. I find that some Cs go in our very flattest show saddle but some need the extra inch or so depth of our slightly deeper seated one. The trees are still both very flat though in both tree and panel shape. The odd one can take a slightly deeper WH type model. They sometimes need to be fitted shorter in the seat than they actually have room for - it can help stop the saddle moving forwards. Four girth straps including a point strap will also help a lot.

My C is a chunk monster, she's really muscled and chunked! we have her in a 16 1/2" wide old Fylde show saddle, which is just straight cut, plain and simple. But if you've had major knee rolls, it IS a hard change!

Very true- i have ended up with a treeless solution saddle and I CANNOT fault it. The difference it has made is unbelievable!
