hi all. i have a five year old, just broken about 2 months, shes starting to come round onto the bit, i ask her then lose it, is this because shes young and still unbalanced? i must say im rather proud of her though, she does a little bit of shoulder in perfect, or do i need to wait for the contact fully? its just nice to play around with her, or will all this help the contact? thank you x

She is doing well. You shouldn't be asking for shoulder in at the moment you should be looking for straightness and rhythm and this exercise at this stage could cause her to be crooked.

shes probably giving you what she can manage at this stage , they can only be expected to work in an outline for short periods at this stage , reward her with a walk on a longrein after . lots of transitions are helpful and small circles at each corner help to soften.

keep schooling short and sweet and regular. 20 mins a days 5/6 days a week is always better than 2 hours solid on a saturday. dont ask for too much in early days, dont be greedy

Lots of transitions both between and within paces, and changes of bend. I wouldn't do shoulder in either at this stage, but I do introduce leg yielding early - all this is to strengthen up the back end and help them to take more weight on the hindquarters, only then can they correctly come into an outline, and as said, only try to hold it for a very short time at first, then reward by walk on a long rein to stretch the muscles used. And bear all this in mind on hacks too, use them for schooling rather than just slopping along although they should be fun not work.

hi all, thanks for the nice comments shes doing fab, im only doing a few steps of shoulder in in walk only just to try and supple her up as shes quite stiff on the right rein, she does come onto a contact but i dont ask for long, she needs a lot of warming up before she comes round so i tend to end on the contact and then 10 mins in a nice relaxed walk to finish.
