When my mare and foal moved fields last year to the one down the road she was just 4 months old and luckily she just followed mum. When weaned she had to do it by herself and was fine and now she's at a field even further. Doesn't come in all that often but hwen hse does she has to walk along a busy is road. So far she's been fine as her winter field was next to a busyish road. Has done her the world of good.

I may be wrong but I thought it was illegal to walk a horse on a road in a headcollar???!!! Our Highland youngster has been walked out in a bridle and she is no bother, she is now 3 but we started with short walks and then increasing the distance as she got more confident . Saying that, all our walking has to be done on roads, a good confidence giver will help too. I suppose they have to do it at some point.

If it's illegal to walk your horse on the road in a headcollar then I must have been breaking the law every single day for the last 10 years.

I walk my 3 year old out at least once a week on the road. For about 20- 30 minutes. I put his bridle under his head collar just in case we do have a problem. But lead him off his head collar. He loves going out for a walk and when he's backed at the end of this year I'm hoping he will be happy and confident on the road !

I used to walk my fell out on the road (well my partner did whilst I rode my mare!) when he was a yearling, just in his headcollar, we went everywhere and he was never any bother, he's pretty bombproof now too!

My partner has been walking my 3 year old shettie out on the roads while I ride my highland. She's unfazed by pretty much everything, we take her out in a bridle, purely for our piece of mind as we know we have that control should we need it.

Oh forgot to say that i got the info from the direct.gov legal dept as I wasn't sure myself so emailed them. The Secretary advised me that " a person leading a horse must have proper control of the said animal, we would deem a bridle to be the correct equipment for this task". They didnt get back to me on whether the bridle could be bitless or not so i asked my Insurers if they would cover me for this.
